Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. - Victor Sanchez (5-4, 3.79) had a career night in a 7-1 Generals (9-14, 40-52) win over the Birmingham Barons (12-10, 41-51) Saturday in Jackson. Sanchez tossed 8.0 innings and struck out nine, both season-highs and the nine punch outs were a career milestone. He also faced just three over the minimum in the game and surrendered just one run on three hits. Dario Pizzano tripled twice and drove in three to help the offensive cause. The game was played in front of 4,210 at The Ballpark at Jackson and gave the club a second straight win and a 2-1 series lead.
After a scoreless first, Jackson got back-to-back doubles to lead off the second by Pat Kivlehan (1x3, 2 R, BB) and Kevin Rivers' (2x3, R, RBI, BB) scored the first Generals run in the same fashion they scored the first run Friday as Kivlehan scored on Rivers's two-bagger.
Dario Pizzano (2x3, 2 R, 3 RBI) tripled to begin the bottom of the fifth and scored on a Mike Dowd (0x4, RBI) groundout to increase the Jackson lead to 2-0. Brock Hebert (1x3, R) singled, stole his first Double-A base and scored on Ketel Marte's (1x5, RBI) two-out base hit to make the score 3-0 Jackson after five.
Another run scored for the Generals in the sixth as Pizzano hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Kivlehan. Jackson had the bases loaded with no outs in the inning, but came away with just the one run and the lead was 4-0.
Dan Black ruined the shutout bid for Sanchez as he homered to lead off the seventh inning. The long ball was the third in the last two games for Birmingham, but it only cut the lead to 4-1.
Pizzano tripled again in the eighth and this time it brought in two runs as Rivers and Jack Marder (1x3, R) scored and three batters later Landry beat out a double play attempt that scored Pizzano and it was 7-1 Generals heading to the ninth.
Richard Vargas (1-1, 5 SV, 4.68) came out of the bullpen to record the final three outs of the game to preserve Jackson's fifth win in their last eight games. Chris Beck (4-8, 3.73) took the loss for Birmingham as he fell to 4-8 on the year.
Jackson's streak of six straight games with at least 10 hits ended Saturday as they only achieved nine, but two doubles from Paolini and two triples from Pizzano powered the offense past a Barons team who currently leads the North Division second half standings by a half game.
The Generals and Barons will play game four of the series Sunday. Jackson will start Tyler Pike (1-1, 3.68) on the mound as Myles Jaye (1-7, 6.19) will look to turn his season around for Birmingham at the Ballpark in Jackson. The game will begin at 6:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
