Chattanooga, TN - The Huntsville Stars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and had to comeback late to defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts 5-4 Saturday night at AT&T Field in Chattanooga.
Joey Paciorek gave the Stars a 3-0 lead in the first inning on his two-out three run homer against Chris Reed.
Chattanooga responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first against Huntsville starter Jed Bradley.
Scott Shebler singled into right field on a 3-2 pitch scoring Darnell Sweeney. Daniel Mayora also hit into a 6-4-3 double play scoring Noel Cuevas trimming the Stars lead to 3-2.
The Lookouts tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Liddi led off the inning with a triple against the right field wall. The next batter Chris O'Brien then scored Liddi on a groundout to shortstop.
Chattanooga grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third. Darnell Sweeney led off with a walk. Sweeney advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher Adam Wesienburger on a pick-off attempt.
Sweeney later scored when Scott Shebler grounded out to shortstop giving Chattanooga a 4-3 advantage.
The Stars came back late in the game against Chattanooga reliever Juan Gonzalez(1-6). In the top of the seventh inning, Gonzalez walked Greg Hopkins. Yadiel Rivera followed by reaching on a bunt single.
With the bases loaded and one out, Weisenburger produced a sacrifice fly scoring Hopkins tying the game at 4-4.
With Rivera at third base and Prince at second and Hainley Statia at the plate, Gonzalez delivered a pitch that was low and off the catcher's glove. Rivera alertly broke for the plate scoring on a passed ball by O'Brien giving the Stars a 5-4 lead.
Tim Dillard pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the Stars out of the bullpen.
David Goforth pitched the ninth for the Stars and recorded his Southern League best eighteenth save when he got O'Brien to fly out to centerfielder Erik Komatsu to end the game.
Jed Bradley, the Huntsville starter improved to 2-4 on the season as he earned the win. Bradley pitched six innings allowing six hits on four runs(three earned).
The Stars(11-12, 57-36) lead the Lookouts(9-14,35-58)2-1 in their five game series. Game four will be Sunday afternoon. The Stars will have RHP Andy Moye(4-2, 4.70) on the hill. Chattanooga will feature RHP Andres Santiago(2-5, 5.00) on the mound. The game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 1:00 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.
