San Jose Sharks Re-Sign Goc, Cavanagh, and Staubitz

SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group II restricted free agent center Marcel Goc to a one-year deal. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In 2007-08, Goc, 24, appeared in 51 games and posted eight points (5-3=8). Goc played in his 200th National Hockey League game on March 3 vs. Montreal.

He also played in the 2008 World Championships for Germany, where he appeared in three games and had four shots on net.

"Marcel is a young player who is at a point in his career where he is ready to make the next step, said Wilson. "We are looking forward to seeing his game evolve."

Goc was one of five Sharks players to participate in the 2006 Winter Olympics, in Turin, Italy. While playing for Team Germany, Goc tallied one goal in five games.

In 210 NHL games, Goc has 43 points (18-25=43) and 58 penalty minutes. He has taken a total of 279 shots on net.

The six-foot, 205-pound native of Calw, Germany was selected by San Jose in the first round (20th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2007-08, Cavanagh, 26, played 77 games with the Worcester Sharks, the top development American Hockey League affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, tallying 55 points (19-36=55), 55 penalty minutes, and a -4 rating. He finished tied for second on the team with 55 points and also placed second in assists with 36. He made his National Hockey League debut on April 3 against Los Angeles and posted an assist for his first NHL point on his first NHL shift with San Jose.

"Tom was a very consistent player with Worcester last season," said Wilson. "His play, especially towards the end of the season, was deserving of a reward and he was able to contribute in the game he played in the NHL."

In 2006-07, Cavanagh, was fourth on Worcester with 44 points, with 12 goals and 32 assists, all of which were career highs at the time.

The six-foot, 200-pound right wing was selected by San Jose in the sixth round (182nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2007-08, Staubitz, 23, played a career-high 73 games posting 20 points (6-14=20) with Worcester, the San Jose Sharks top development affiliate in the American Hockey League. He also recorded 195 penalty minutes, which was second on the team.

"Brad is a big, strong player that has shown improvement in his three seasons in our organization," said Wilson. "We asked him to change from defense to forward and he has accepted the challenge and is making the most of it."

In 2006-07, Staubitz posted five points (1-4=5) in 51 games with Worcester. He was second on the team with 137 penalty minutes. He accumulated 13 penalty minutes in five Calder Cup Playoff games.

Staubitz was signed as an undrafted free agent on September 19, 2005.
