The Kats entered the contest unbeaten in their last four games and put up their highest point total of the season. Former SaberCat Fred Coleman led the Kats in receiving, catching six passes for 75 yards and three TD's. T.T. Toliver and Darryl Hammond also figured in the scoring, each hauling in a pair of TDs. San Jose QB Mark Grieb started the game by completing his first eight passes, extending his streak to 28 consecutive completions dating back to Apr. 15 vs. Dallas. However, his streak came to an end as his ninth pass attempt was intercepted by Defensive Player of the Game Kahlil Carter, who had two picks on the night. Grieb finished the night completing 26-of-35 passes for 331 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Rodney Wright earned his third consecutive Ironman of the Game award after catching a game-high 10 passes for 134 yards and a TD. San Jose scored with 14 seconds remaining in the game on a 3-yard run by Steve Warren, moving the SaberCats to within two points, 57-55. But Grieb's pass on the two-point conversion attempt slipped through the fingers of Rashied Davis in the end zone. THE COACHES:
San Jose - Darren Arbet, 8th season
76-36 (.679) reg. season; 85-40 (.680) overall
1-4 (.200) career vs. Nashville
1-4 (.200) career vs. Pat Sperduto
Now in his eighth season at the helm of the SaberCats, two-time Coach of the Year Darren Arbet currently ranks 6th in the AFL with 85 career victories and needs just one more win to tie Perry Moss for 5th place. Last season Arbet led the SaberCats to their 6th consecutive winning season and playoff appearance. Since the start of the 2000 season his teams have compiled a 70-28 (.714) regular season record and have set league records for most regular season wins (13 - 2002), most wins in a season (16- 2002), most consecutive wins in a regular season (12 - 2002), most wins to end a season (11 - 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 - 2000-01). Last season Arbet became the second fastest head coach to reach 80 career wins, doing it in 111 games. Only Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum, who reached the 80-win mark in 96 games, got to that milestone quicker.
Nashville - Pat Sperduto, 5th season
37-27-1 (.577) reg. season; 42-30-1 (.582) overall
4-1 (.800) career vs. San Jose
4-1 (.800) career vs. Darren Arbet
Now in his fifth season as head coach of the Kats, Pat Sperduto owns a 42-30-1 career record. At the helm of the original Kats from 1999 to 2001, Sperduto joined the NFL's Tennessee Titans after the Kats franchise was sold and moved to Atlanta prior to the 2002 season. He was hired to oversee the startup process of the expansion Kats franchise that returned to the field last season. Sperduto took over as head coach from Eddie Khayat in 1999 and led the team to back-to-back ArenaBowl appearances in 2000 and 2001. A three-time ArenaBowl champion, Sperduto won two titles as a player with Tampa Bay and one as a Storm assistant.

RECENT RESULTS: SABERCATS 56, Georgia 55 (overtime) - Friday, March 17, 2006 - HP Pavilion - Mark Grieb threw four touchdown passes and the San Jose SaberCats (3-5) stopped Georgia's two-point conversion attempt in overtime to post a 56-55 over the Force. Grieb, who completed 30-of-46 attempts for 337 yards on the night, tossed a 17-yard scoring pass to James Roe with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter to pull the SaberCats within 49-47. The two hooked up on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 49-49. Georgia had one last opportunity to win the game in regulation time but kicker Nelson Garner missed a 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired. San Jose scored on its first overtime possession when game Ironman Phil Glover ran in from 2-yards out, his third rushing touchdown of the game, and Brian Schmitz's PAT gave San Jose a 56-49 lead. Following Offensive Player of the Game Derek Lee's fifth touchdown reception, a 36-yard strike from Matt Nagy, the Force elected to go for the 2-point conversion and the win. Nagy's pass sailed over the head of Lee, bounced off the rebound net and fell harmlessly on the HP Pavilion turf as the SaberCats celebrated their victory snapping a 2-game home losing streak. Trailing 28-17 at halftime, the SaberCats scored the first 16 points of the second half. Rookie Ben Nelson, who had 13 receptions for 165 yards, scored on a 7-yard pass from Grieb to give San Jose a 33-28 lead midway through the third quarter. Nagy completed 22-of-36 for 324 yards with seven touchdowns. His favorite target was Lee, who had 11 catches for 192 yards. Georgia dropped to 4-4 on the year with all four losses coming by a combined five points. San Jose played its sixth overtime game in franchise history and second this year. The SaberCats are 4-2 all-time in overtime games. NOTES: Ben Nelson's 13 catches tie for the second-most in SaberCats history...Rookie lineman Van Brown, signed to the active roster last week, recorded a sack for a safety and pressured Nagy on the games final play...Rookie Jason Geathers made his AFL debut catching 3 passes for 39 yards with 2 PBUs on defense...Phil Glover ran for a career-high 3 TDs...San Jose is 3-1 all-time in overtime games played at HP Pavilion.

TRENDS:
ON THE ROAD AGAIN - The SaberCats return to the road after a 2-game homestand heading to Nashville for Saturday night's showdown. Thanks to their record five-game road trip earlier in the year, the SaberCats do not play consecutive road games the remainder of the season. San Jose is 2-3 on the road in 2006 and has a 47-37 (.560) all-time regular season road record.
OH FOR NASHVILLE - The SaberCats have played three games in the Music City and have lost them all being outscored 174 to 113. San Jose lost 47-21 on May 2, 1997 in the Kats' first ever regular season game. San Jose's point total in that game represents the second-lowest in team history. In the last meeting between the clubs in Nashville, the Kats posted a 71-47 win in a semifinal playoff game on Aug. 11, 2001.
BACK TO BACK - The SaberCats are looking to post consecutive wins for the first time since last April. San Jose beat Dallas, 83-71, on April 15, 2005 and won the next week, 89-41, at Colorado on April 22. Since then, a span of 12 regular season games, the team has not won back-to-back games.
CENTRALLY LOCATED - Saturday's matchup with Nashville is the third for San Jose against a Central Division opponent on the road this year. Dating back to last season, and including playoffs, the SaberCats have lost three straight on the road to Central Division teams and four in-a-row overall. San Jose's last win against a Central Division foe came at Colorado on Apr. 22, 2005, an 89-41 decision. San Jose owns a lifetime mark of 28-17 (.622) against the Central and is 14-11 (.560) on the road.
EXTRA SESSION - After playing just four overtime games in 11 seasons prior to 2006 and not playing an OT contest since the 2001 season, the SaberCats have played two OT games this year. San Jose's OT win over Georgia on Mar. 17 gave the team a 4-2 all-time record in OT games and a 3-1 mark in OT games played at HP Pavilion.
PASSING FANCY - Georgia QB Matt Nagy threw for 324 yards in his team's loss to San Jose on Mar. 17, the fourth straight game San Jose has allowed the opposing starting QB to throw for over 300 yards. L.A.'s Sonny Cumbie (348), Utah's Joe Germaine (367) and Chicago's Matt D'Orazio (351) all preceded Nagy in the 300 club. The SaberCats rank 16th in the AFL in pass defense giving up 285.1 yards per game.
STARTING POINT - Two rookies, WR/LB Jason Geathers and OL/DL Van Brown, made their AFL debuts for San Jose against Georgia on Mar. 17 bringing to seven the number of first-year players to see action in a game for the SaberCats in the first half of the season. Geathers and Brown, along with Marquis Floyd, Ben Nelson and Julius Gant, are all on the active roster, while JaJuan Huddleston and Alan Harper are currently on injured reserve.
RECORD HOLDER - QB Mark Grieb owns the SaberCats and the defunct Anaheim Piranhas record for passing yards in a game with both coming against the Nashville Kats. While with Anaheim in 1997, Grieb threw for 361 yards and 8 TDs completing 25-of-34 passes in a 68-62 loss on June 14. Almost four years to the day later, Grieb threw for 430 yards and 7 TDs completing 30-of-39 attempts in a 58-57 overtime win on June 16, 2001. In that game Grieb completed 16 consecutive passes in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead San Jose back from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit. Current Kats James Baron, Cory Fleming and Darryl Hammond were involved in both games while head coach Pat Sperduto was Nashville's defensive coordinator in 1997.
NOTES:
THE WACKY WEST - It was expected to be a competitive division, and it is with four teams just one game behind division leading Arizona in the standings. The Rattlers have vaulted to the top on the strength of a 3-game winning streak while L.A. has won two straight after a 5-game skid. San Jose will be the only team playing outside the division this week as Utah hosts Las Vegas and Arizona entertains Los Angeles on Mar. 24. A change in the 2006 playoff format has the four division winners receiving a first round playoff bye and hosting a game in the second round. Games within the division take on more importance this year with head-to-head competition factoring as the main tie-breaker. Since the AFL went to a four-division format in 1995, no team with a sub-.500 record has won a division title and just two teams, Orlando (2002) and New York (2003), have won division titles with a .500 mark.

ONE MORE - SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet is one victory away from tying former Chicago Bruisers, Detroit Drive and Orlando Predators head coach Perry Moss for 5th place on the AFL's career wins list. Arbet won his 85th game on Mar. 17 when his SaberCats posted a 56-55 overtime win over the Georgia Force. Arbet was a member of the Los Angeles Cobras in 1988 when his team forged a tie with the Moss-led Bruisers on July 14, the first tie game in league history. Nashville head coach Pat Sperduto was part of the second tie game in league history when his Kats and the Dallas Desperados played to a 41-41 tie on Apr. 8, 2005.

LIKE A GLOVE - FB/LB Phil Glover has had a solid first half of the season for San Jose. The 4th year AFL veteran scored a career-high 3 rushing TDs in San Jose's win over Georgia on Mar. 17, the second-highest game total in team history, and is currently tied with Austin QB John Fitzgerald for the most rush TDs in the league with 8. Glover had a career-high 7 carries in the game for a season-best 16 yards against the Force and is San Jose's leading rusher with 53 yards on 23 attempts. He scored on a 2-yard run in OT and added an assisted tackle and a PBU for game Ironman honors.
MATCHUP - Saturday night's game offers an intriguing matchup of the AFL's top defense against one of the league's hottest offenses. Over the past three games San Jose has amassed 1,047 yards of total offense (349.0 ypg) and has scored 182 points (60.7 ppg). Meanwhile, Nashville leads the league allowing just 244.8 yards and 42.4 points per game. Nashville has held an opponent to under 40 points in four games and is undefeated in those contests but in the three games it has allowed more than 50 points, the Kats are winless.
FULL NELSON - Rookie Ben Nelson continues to impress as the team's starting OS. In his third start Nelson hauled in 13 catches, the second-highest single game total in team history, for 165 yards and 2 TDs in San Jose's 56-55 overtime win over Georgia on Mar. 17. Coupled with his 11 catch-162 yard performance against Los Angeles on Mar. 12, Nelson established a San Jose record for most pass receptions in consecutive games with 24 and had the second-highest receiving yardage total with 327. During his three starting assignments, Nelson has totaled 31 catches for 404 yards and 5 TDs.

ON THE MARK - QB Mark Grieb threw for 337 yards in San Jose's 56-55 overtime win against Georgia on Mar. 17, his second straight 300-yard passing game, fourth of the season and 26th of his career. Grieb completed 30 passes, the second-highest game total in franchise history, in 46 attempts and threw an interception late in the first half, his first pick in 2 ½ games covering 86 attempts. Over the last three games Grieb has thrown for 1,025 yards and 20 TDs with just the one INT while completing 83-of-121 attempts (68.6%). Grieb surpassed the 25,000 plateau in career passing yards (25,215) and ranks 2nd to Tampa Bay's Shane Stafford in passing yards this season with 2,432. He also ranks 3rd in attempts (302) and 4th in completions (197). IMPRESSIVE DEBUT - Rookie lineman Van Brown, who was signed to the team's active roster on Mar. 10, made his AFL debut a memorable one against Georgia on Mar. 17. Brown started on the defensive line and posted a sack that resulted in a safety when he wrapped up Force QB Matt Nagy early in the third quarter. He also applied pressure to Nagy on Georgia's 2-point conversion attempt in OT. Brown became the 7th player to record a sack in his first game as a SaberCat and the 3rd rookie to turn the trick joining Dan Loney (2002) and Cedric Pittman (2003). Brown's safety was the first recorded by a SaberCat since Steve Warren sacked Grand Rapids QB Michael Bishop in the endzone on Mar. 18, 2005.
ROE-LIFIC - WR/LB James Roe had his string of consecutive 100-yard receiving games stopped at four, one short of tying the club record, but he still totaled 6 catches for 62 yards and a TD in San Jose's 56-55 win against Georgia in overtime on Mar. 17. Roe has at least one TD grab in all six games he's played for a total of 14 and ranks 5th in the AFL in receiving yards/game with 96.3. In five games since his return to the lineup following his opening night injury, Roe has 45 catches for 567 yards and 14 TDs. Despite missing nearly three full games, Roe is on pace for 92 receptions, which would be the 5th highest single season total in SaberCats history.

QB LEON MURRAY - A member of the 2003 All-Rookie team, Murray lost his starting job when the club traded for Clint Stoerner in the offseason. Murray twice faced San Jose as a member of the Georgia Force, both losses, throwing for 452 yards and nine TDs on 39-of-69 passing with just one INT.
