San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SAN JOSE, CALIF. -- The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has acquired midfielder/forward Arturo Alvarez from FC Dallas in exchange for allocation money and a first round pick in the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

"Arturo is a dynamic attacking player who should fit in well with our team," said General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. "He can play both in midfield and at forward so he also has great versatility, which is important for us as we continue to build our team."

Alvarez, who was originally drafted by the Earthquakes in 2003, made 16 appearances with FC Dallas this season. He scored three goals and notched three assists. With FC Dallas from 2005-08, Alvarez recorded 11 goals and 11 assists in 86 appearances. He made a career-high 27 appearances last year, while scoring three goals and picking up three assists to help Dallas reach the playoffs.

While with FC Dallas, Alvarez scored the first goal in SuperLiga history in FC Dallas' 1-1 tie with Chivas de Guadalajara on July 24, 2007. He also helped FC Dallas reach the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final. In the final, Alvarez scored one of the two goals for FC Dallas in their 3-2 loss to the Revolution.

Alvarez, 23, began his MLS career with the Earthquakes after being selected with the 13th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft in 2003 straight out of high school. He made his debut on April 19, 2003 against the Kansas City Wizards becoming the youngest player ever to appear in a game for the Earthquakes. Making his first start on June 14, 2003 at Dallas, he scored the game-winning goal and notched an assist. He made 15 appearances in 2003 to help San Jose capture its second MLS Cup Championship. Alvarez played 11 games with the Quakes in 2004.

FC Dallas originally acquired Alvarez from San Jose in 2005 along with Richard Mulrooney and the Earthquakes sixth overall pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for Brad Davis and the fourth overall pick in the SuperDraft.

"He has grown into a very good attacking player in this league and he was outstanding last season," said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. "He is a great presence in the final third of the field, something that we have been lacking this year. It is exciting for the club to acquire a player of his caliber."

Alvarez played 11 matches with the United States Under-20 National Team in 2004, scoring one goal and recording three assists. Prior to playing for the U.S. Under-20 team, Alvarez was the leading scorer for the Under-18 team with seven goals and one assist.
