New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - After finishing atop Group B of SuperLiga 2008 as the only undefeated team in the competition, the New England Revolution (2-0-1, 7 pts.) will continue its pursuit of the SuperLiga title when the club hosts Mexican power Atlante (2-1-0, 6 pts.) in a semifinal match at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at Gillette Stadium. The game will be televised nationally in Spanish on Telefutura, while streaming video of the match will be available in both English and Spanish on mlsnet.com and superliga2008.com. ESPN Deportes Radio will carry the game nationally in Spanish, while local listeners can tune in to WRKO 680 AM for English audio.
While the Revs were unfamiliar with their two previous Mexican opponents in SuperLiga 2008, Wednesday night's semifinal match-up pits New England against an Atlante side that it met just five months ago. The two clubs squared off in a friendly match on Mar. 6 in Playa Del Carmen during the Revolution's preseason trip to Mexico, with Atlante earning a narrow, 1-0 victory. The match was especially noteworthy because of its physical nature, with New England earning 10 cautions - including two each to Jeff Larentowicz and Chris Albright, who were both ejected - and Atlante picking up one caution and one ejection.
The Revs and "Los Potros de Hierro" took quite different paths to reach the SuperLiga 2008 semifinals. The Revs finished atop Group B with back-to-back 1-0 victories over Santos Laguna and Pachuca followed by a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA, while Atlante rebounded from a 4-0 loss in its Group A opener with a 3-2 win over D.C. and a 2-0 triumph over CD Guadalajara to slip into the semifinals on a head-to-head tiebreaker.
The winner of Wednesday night's semifinal will advance to the tournament's final - which will be played on Aug. 5 - to face either the Houston Dynamo or Pachuca. If the Revolution wins, it will host the final at Gillette Stadium regardless of who wins the other semifinal.
