Alaska Aces News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego scored three times in the final 8:28 to overcome a 2-1 deficit and defeat the Alaska Aces 4-2 before a crowd of 8,180 at the Sports Arena Saturday night.

The Gulls seemed flat early, and Alaska capitalized with two goals off the rush in the game's first 10 minutes. Playing on the wing for the first time all year, Jonathan Gauthier (normally a defenseman) set up Wes Dorey for a one-timer at 5:13. Five minutes later, Ryan Moren scored for the second time in as many nights when his attempt to find Dorey perched in front of the net banked off the skate of San Diego defenseman Dan Cousineau at 10:18. The Gulls drew within 2-1 when Chris Gobert flicked a wrist shot that Alaska starter Dan Murphy appeared to have stopped, only to see the puck bounce off his back.

The score stayed 2-1 through a scoreless and often dull second period, and the Aces continued to stifle San Diego through the first half of the third, limiting the Gulls to just one shot. But Mark Pederson found Greg Barber in the left circle for the equalizer at 11:32, and San Diego grabbed its first lead at 3-2 when Dean Tiltgen's second effort jarred the puck free from Alaska defenseman Mike Jones with 2:31 remaining. The Aces' pleas that the puck had been frozen went to no avail, and Sylvain Deschatalets put the game away with a backhander top shelf on a breakaway 47 seconds later.

The Aces (22-13-3) have dropped three straight games for the first time all year and have fallen into a third-place tie with San Diego (22-10-3) heading into tomorrow's rematch at 6:00 p.m. AST. Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
