SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Using a stifling trap defensively and the hot hand of Mark Pederson, San Diego completed a two-game sweep of Alaska by a score of 2-1 before 1,924 Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Pederson's first of two goals came directly off a face-off, as he blasted a one-timer past Alaska starter Dan Murphy 4:31 into the game. San Diego had scored on its first shot, and the Aces would not pull even for the rest of the game despite outshooting the Gulls 9-6 in the first period. A scoreless second period ended with San Diego having outshot Alaska 12-5 but still only holding a 1-0 lead.

Midway through the third period, San Diego took advantage of one of the few odd-man rushes permitted by either team. Sylvain Deschatalets whipped a cross-ice pass to an open Pederson in the left circle, who made no mistake for his 25th goal of the year and a 2-0 bulge with 11:18 left to play. Trailing 2-0, Alaska pulled Murphy, who finished with 24 saves, and ruined Trevor Koenig's shutout bid with 18.8 seconds remaining, as Wes Dorey punched home a loose puck in front for his 11th goal of the season. The Aces failed to get a shot in the final seconds and head back to Anchorage in fourth place after an 0-4 road trip.

Alaska (22-14-3) staggers into the All-Star Break with four consecutive defeats and the schedule does not let up despite a return to home ice—Pacific Division leader Idaho invades Sullivan Arena next Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
