San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - Dean Tiltgen scored with 2:31 left in the third period and Sylvain Deschatelets added an insurance marker moments later, lifting the San Diego Gulls to a 4-2 victory over the Alaska Aces Saturday night, before 8,180 at the Sports Arena.

The Aces at one point had a 2-0 lead but San Diego scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period to skate away with the two points. Trevor Koenig, who kept the Gulls in the game when they fell behind early, finished with 21 saves and upped his record 16-5-3.

San Diego (22-10-3) and Alaska (22-13-3) are now tied for third in the Pacific Division, six points back of the front-running Idaho Steelheads.

Alaska drew first blood 5:13 into the first on Wes Dorey's 10th goal of the season. Jonathan Gauthier picked up the puck at center ice and skated in two-on-one with Dorey, streaking down the middle. Gauthier hesitated, then centered it to Dorey, who redirected it between Trevor Koenig's pads.

Ryan Moren gave the Aces a 2-0 lead with his second goal at 10:18 after his pass to Dorey was inadvertently tipped into the net by Dan Cousineau. San Diego got caught on another outnumbered attack as Joe Talbot sprung Dorey up the left wing boards. Moren, who was trailing the play, grabbed Dorey's pass and tried to give it right back, but it banked off Cousineau's skate past Koenig.

The Gulls made it a 2-1 game at 13:46 of the first on Chris Gobert's seventh tally of the season. Gobert got a drop pass from Dennis Purdie in the slot and fired a wrist shot that handcuffed Dan Murphy and fell into the net.

San Diego had a few chances to tie it in the second period, but Murphy's stingy goaltending kept the Aces in front. The Alaska netminder only had to make eight saves in the middle frame, but most of those came at point-blank range.

Greg Barber finally solved Murphy 11:32 into the third period, knotting the game at two apiece. Mark Pederson held the puck in at the left point and found a wide-open Barber, who beat Murphy blocker-side. With the assist, Pederson extended his point streak to 10 games.

It went back and forth until Tiltgen netted the game-winning tally with 2:31 left. Tiltgen got off a shot from the right wing circle that was saved, but he was able to poke home the rebound. Deschatelets then put the icing on the cake 47 seconds later, backhanding a shot over Murphy's shoulder.
