San Diego Gulls News Release
LONG BEACH, Cailf. -- The San Diego Gulls are flying high, extending their winning streak to eight games after crushing their long-time rival, the Long Beach Ice Dogs 3-0 on Friday night at the Long Beach Arena. San Diego's red-hot goaltender Trevor Koenig earned his fourth shutout of the season and 13th of his West Coast Hockey League career, an all-time high. San Diego (16-10-1) sits comfortably in third place as they look forward to starting a seven-game homestand this weekend.
Dean Tiltgen got things started for the Gulls early in the first period with a beautiful short-handed goal off a breakaway pass from R.J. Enga. Enga found the puck on the far boards in the defensive zone, and passed to Tiltgen who was streaking down the ice and found the back of the net with a shot that beat Long Beach goaltender B.J. Boxma on his stick side just inside the left post. The goal at 8:55 earned Enga an assist and puts Tiltgen on the top of WCHL goals scored list with 15.
Both teams skated to a scoreless second period that was highlighted by a scrap between Ice Dog heavyweight Roger Maxwell and Dennis Mullen. The altercation resulted in multiple penalties and misconducts for both players and gave the Gulls a five-on-three opportunity in the third period. Unfortunately, the Gulls were unable to take advantage of the power plays.
Mark Pederson notched the second goal at 3:44 of the third period, beating Boxma with a backhand shot, his 14th goal of the season. Kevin Grant and Cory Cyrenne earned the assists.
Sylvain Deschatelets earned his third consecutive goal in three games with a shot that went in just under the crossbar with Boxma sprawled on the ice. Mike McGhan found the puck in the corner and centered the pass to Deschatelets who shot from between the circles. McGhan and Grant earned the assists for the goal that came at 7:20 of the third period.
Long Beach (12-14-2), playing without the services of their top two scorers, Chris Kenady and Tomas Hradecky, only managed 19 shots in the game. Koenig easily turned away all Ice Dog shots and has only allowed one goal in the last 213:09 minutes of play.
