Men O'War win in Greensboro 5-2

GREENSBORO, NC - The Lexington Men O'War stormed out to an early lead, and earned a 5-2 victory over the Greensboro Generals (19-7-4) in front of 3,069 in attendance at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Men O'War (13-12-5) assumed an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Mike Sgroi scored 6:11 into the opening frame, and 54 seconds later Mark Smith added his twelfth goal of the season. The third goal of the period came at the 18:47 mark of the first on another Sgroi goal.

The Generals got on the board with 8:30 remaining in the second period, as Matt Turek converted a power-play opportunity to make the deficit 3-1. Lexington would score at the 13:49 mark of the game on a power-play conversion by Marc-Andre Thinel. Just 1:50 later in the period, the Men O'War scored their fifth goal of the night on a Ryan Fultz shot.

The Generals Sam Ftorek added his team-leading 18th goal of the season with 34 seconds remaining in the second period, and a scoreless third period would make the score stand at 5-2.

The Generals now face the Charlotte Checkers tomorrow night at the Greensboro Coliseum, with a 7:30 start time. A regulation victory would give the Generals the Carolina Cup, an award shared between the two franchises for best head-to-head record during the season.
