San Antonio Talons News Release
SAN ANTONIO (October 11, 2011) - At a press conference in late September, the Talons changed the game of professional sports in Texas when the team officially announced its arrival in San Antonio, promising a season of commitment and excellence. Today, the San Antonio Talons begin to deliver on that promise as they release the official team schedule and introduce a lineup of top-tier coaching staff to lead the team through the inaugural 2012 season. Lee Johnson has been named Head Coach for the Talons, and will be supported by Assistant Coaches Tyrone Peace and Corey Mayfield. The San Antonio Talons will open up the season at the Alamodome against the Utah Blaze on Saturday, March 10, 2012.
"As former players and seasoned leaders, this coaching staff represents extensive championship experience, from all levels and leagues of football," says Talons GM and CEO Jason Lohe. "I am confident that with their expertise and passion for the sport, we are destined for a winning season here in San Antonio, and on the road."
Head Coach Lee Johnson began his football career as a player, and holds a repertoire of championship titles including the Super Bowl, Arena Bowl and NFL Europe championship. In 1997 Johnson took on his first leadership position, serving as a defensive line coach, and in 2000 transitioned into coaching in the Arena Football League (AFL). Since then, Johnson has represented teams such as Chicago, Cleveland and Colorado and has come to be recognized as the best defensive coordinator in the league.
"We are a team dedicated to character, integrity and capability and I will make sure our players live up to those standards," says Johnson. "As a coach, I have faced many of these teams before and I think we have a real advantage here, not only do we have many of the best players in the league, but we are a new team that will come out surpassing expectations of the city, and the league."
Assistant Coach Tyrone Peace will also join the Talons for this landmark season, bringing extensive experience as both a player and a coach. Peace spent five years playing in the AFL as a wide receiver and defensive back and has dedicated the past three years to coaching defensive backs at both the collegiate level and AFL levels. Coach Peace is also known for his unwavering commitment with community efforts and has been working with at-risk youth for 12 years, serving as a mentor, life coach, transport agent and in-home support counselor. Peace will continue to be actively involved in community and youth programs as he steps into his position in the Talons franchise.
Texas native Corey Mayfield is returning home to serve as an Assistant Coach of the San Antonio Talons, where his AFL coaching experience with both the offensive and defensive lines will help catapult the Talons to a top spot in the league. Mayfield holds a stellar reputation for his collegiate career at Oklahoma University and his coaching career in which he has helped coach several first team players.
The Talons will open up against the Utah Blaze in week one at the Alamodome. During the 2012 season they will play Chicago Rush, Pittsburgh Power, Tampa Bay Storm, New Orleans Voodoo, Arizona Rattlers, Kansas City Command, Orlando Predators, San Jose Sabercats, Spokane Shock and the Iowa Barnstormers. All home games will be played on Saturdays in the Alamodome, with the final home game of the season taking place on Saturday, July 14 against the Arizona Rattlers.
