Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Gabriel Quintana, Chase Jensen, and Nick Torres homered Sunday as San Antonio knocked off Corpus Christi 7-4 at Whataburger Field before 4,047.
The Missions (10-20) snapped a six-game losing streak. Hooks right fielder Derek Fisher posted four hits and fell a triple short of the cycle.
It didn't take long for Corpus Christi (14-15) to score off Fabio Castillo and establish the day's theme. Lead-off man Teoscar Hernandez launched the fourth pitch he saw to the back of the bullpen in left-center field.
San Antonio quickly retaliated against Kyle Smith (0-4), Quintana belting a 1-1 two-out, two-run homer to left. Nick Schulz opened the Missions second with a ground-rule double to deep left-center.
The Hooks equalized in the fourth. Fisher's opening double became the tying score when Danry Vasquez dropped a one-out single single in front of right fielder Yeison Asencio.
San Antonio reclaimed the lead at 4-2 courtesy of another two-run blast during the fifth, Jensen's first home run of 2016 plating Ryan Miller (four-pitch walk).
Smith then gave way to David Paulino after five hits, a walk, and five strikeouts.
With one away in the home sixth, Corpus Christi pulled within a run on Fisher's 445-foot bomb to the left of the batter's eye. That prompted Castillo's exit. The former Rangers farmhand, surrendered six hits, walked two, and struck out five while improving to 3-4.
Torres' 2-0, two-out solo home run off Paulino in the eighth restored the San Antonio lead to two, but Fisher greeted Jason Jester with an RBI single in the home half to tally Evan Gattis, who had doubled off Adam Cimber.
The next frame, Jensen's two-out, two-strike, two-run single into right field provided a three-run cushion for the visitors. The Missions ninth was extended by a Paulino throwing error as he attempted to start a double play.
San Antonio turned three double plays, including twin killings in the eighth and ninth. Jason Jester, who earned his fourth save in four opportunities, was the beneficiary of both.
Brian Holmes (1-1) takes the mound for Corpus Christi Monday at 7:05 vs. Johnny Hellweg (1-3). All fans enjoy $1 Hots Dogs & Soda from Mrs Baird's.
