INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Indians starter Adrian Sampson has been named the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 27 ? May 3. The right-hander took home the award after captaining the Tribe's combined shutout of Lehigh Valley on Friday (May 1) at Victory Field.
Making just his ninth career start at the Triple-A level, Sampson cruised through his longest outing of the year with four scattered hits and a season high-tying seven strikeouts over seven dominant innings. He tossed just 75 pitches and faced only five batters above the minimum to pick up his first win of the 2015 campaign.
The 23 year old opened his gem by retiring six straight batters through the first and second innings. He worked around a leadoff single in the third and set down 10 of 11 opposing hitters through the fifth frame.
Pitching into the sixth, Sampson allowed a walk and one-base hit for his only set of runners to consecutively reach on the evening. He stranded both threats, retired each of Lehigh Valley's final six batters and stamped the exclamation point on his victory with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
As of May 4, Sampson is 1-3 with a 2.45 ERA through five starts with the Tribe. He ranks second in the IL with 31 strikeouts and tied for fourth with 29 1/3 innings pitched.
He is the first Indians player to win an IL weekly award since right-hander Brandon Cumpton took home the honors on July 21, 2014.
