Syracuse Mets News Release

Syracuse, NY (May 4, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Norfolk Tides on Monday night, 3-1, in an extra-inning affair. The Chiefs loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to put a run across before losing in 10 innings. Chiefs starter A.J. Cole pitched six strong innings, allowing only one run on seven hits.

Syracuse (10-15) struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Norfolk knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa. Kila Ka'aihue led off the bottom of the inning with a five-pitch walk. Gamboa looked like he had a chance to get away with the leadoff walk after he retired the next two batters. However, Dan Butler followed with a double into the right-center-field corner to move Ka'aihue to third. With two outs and two on, Cutter Dykstra hit a ground-ball single to right field, scoring Ka'aihue from third. Butler was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Henry Urrutia to end the inning.

Norfolk (13-12) came right back with a run of its own in the top of the fourth inning off of Cole. He surrendered two hits to open up the frame to Chris Parmelee and Christian Walker. Then, with runners on first and second, Dariel Alvarez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. With two outs, Urrutia dropped a single in front of Jason Martinson in left to tie the game at one apiece.

The Chiefs threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with only one out, but were unable to put any runs across the board. Designated hitter Mark Minicozzi led off the inning with a single and was then replaced by pinch runner Kevin Mattison. On the next pitch, Mattison stole second, and Ka'aihue eventually walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and reliever Pat McCoy walked center fielder Matt den Dekker to load the bases. McCoy worked out of the jam, however, striking out Butler and forcing Dykstra to ground out to second.

It was a similar situation in the ninth for the Chiefs, as they runners on first and second with two outs, but strikeouts by third baseman Ian Stewart and Ka'aihue ended Syracuse's opportunity to win the game in nine innings.

The Tides finally broke the 1-1 stalemate in the top of the 10th inning. Chiefs reliever Rafael Martin gave up a leadoff infield single to third baseman Michael Almanzar, who then advanced to second on a bunt by catcher Audry Perez. Martin walked the next two batters he faced to load the bases. With two outs, Martin gave up the go-ahead, two-run bloop single to Parmelee over the second baseman Dykstra's head.

The Chiefs are back in action for another night game tomorrow with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Syracuse will send right-hander Scott McGregor to the hill to face Norfolk right-hander Tyler Wilson.
