Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Timberwolves today named Sam Newman-Beck as Head Coach of the Iowa Wolves, the team's G League affiliate. Newman-Beck spent last season as an assistant coach with the Erie BayHawks, formerly the G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks.
"We're excited to announce Sam as head coach of the Iowa Wolves," said Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas. "The Wolves are an important part of our development program and a vital component to our future success, and we feel Sam is the right person to lead this team."
"I'm looking forward to working with Sam on the development of our players in Iowa," said Timberwolves Head Coach Ryan Saunders. "Sam's coaching philosophies align perfectly with what we're trying to build here in Minnesota. I've witnessed firsthand his passion for the game and his ability to create strong relationships with players. With those qualities, he is a natural choice for the position and we're really excited about him leading our program down in Iowa."
"Sam has shown a great ability to connect with and teach young players - qualities that are critical for success in this position," said Timberwolves Assistant General Manager Gianluca Pascucci. "We feel that Sam gives us the best opportunity to develop our players and put them in a position to succeed."
"I'm thrilled to be back with the Minnesota Timberwolves organization," Newman-Beck said. "I'm impressed with the vision that Gersson and Ryan have for the organization, both now and for the future, and will carry those same principles in my role as head coach of the Iowa Wolves."
Newman-Beck spent eight seasons (2010-2018) with the Timberwolves organization as a coaching associate/video scouting director. Prior to that he spent one season with the Boston Celtics as assistant video coordinator/intern in 2009-10. Newman-Beck played college basketball at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, graduating in 2009.
Newman-Beck is also Founder and President of "Hoops and Hope: Honoring Medford's Youth," a charity event that raises funds to support youth activities in his hometown of West Medford, Massachusetts.
