Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, MS -- Folks looking for ways to help their neighbors affected by the recent rash of tornado storm damage will have an opportunity to do so during the February 26 game when the RiverKings feature the Oxford-Lafayette chapter of The Salvation Army. The RiverKings will face off that night against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, 7:05pm at the DeSoto Civic Center.
The Salvation Army is providing aid to anyone affected by the disaster, but its inventory is getting low.
"We've put a lot of people in hotels and paid for a lot of groceries," said chapter director Lisa Coleman.
Coleman, whose chapter also services Panola and Yalobusha Counties, said that the chapter's income comes primarily from three sources: United Way, its two thrift stores in Oxford and Batesville and seasonal "kettle money" taken in during the Christmas season. There is no fund-raising at the national level.
"We've almost exhausted all of our kettle money in this disaster," said Coleman.
Additionally, the Staff Council of the University of Mississippi is trying to create "start-up" packages for the victims that would help provide some basic essentials in a home.
A kit will include:
Kitchen; a spatula and large spoon set, towels and pot holders, a 10-inch skillet, a 2 quart sauce pan, plastic bowls, plates and cups for four, a 2-quart pitcher and a set of silverware - forks, spoons and knives.
Bedding: full sheet sets, twin sheet sets and a blanket.
Complete kits or individual items - new or like new - are being accepted in Procurement Services at Ole Miss.
"We've been fortunate to have a ton of clothing items donated, so the families are in good shape in that department," Coleman said.
The Salvation Army, an international movement, defines its work in the following way: The Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army, recognizing the interdependence of material, emotional and spiritual needs, began with two primary functions: in addition to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, the organization's founder helped to feed and shelter of the hungry and homeless and to aid alcoholics in rehabilitation.
In addition, new programs that address contemporary needs have been established. Among these are disaster relief services, day care centers, summer camps, holiday assistance, services for the aging, AIDS education and residential services, medical facilities, shelters for battered women and children, family and career counseling, vocational training, correction services, and substance abuse rehabilitation. More than 30 million a year are aided in some form by services provided by The Salvation Army.
As of 2005, its outreach has been expanded to include more than 100 countries, and the Gospel is preached by its officers in more than 160 languages.
