RiverKings defeat Thunder 6-2

The Mississippi RiverKings scored four times in the third period to defeat the Wichita Thunder 6-2 tonight at the DeSoto Civic Center.

The RiverKings (28-18-2) ended a four-game losing streak and moved one point ahead of the Texas Brahmas for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Northern Conference.

Chad Woollard scored his 27th goal of the season 4:06 into the final period to give the RiverKings a 3-2 lead. Then Steve Makway scored on a power play to register his ninth tally of the campaign with 6:02 remaining to give the RiverKings a two-goal cushion. Finally, Rane Carnegie scored his 14th and 15th goals of the year in the last five minutes to round out the scoring.

The RiverKings led 42 seconds into the game thanks to Ryan Campbell's 22nd goal of the season. However, the Thunder (16-31-1) tied the game at 7:13 of the second period thanks to Mike Lukajic's 14th of the year. Ryan Held answered at 10:25 for the RiverKings, scoring his 20th of the season to give his team a 2-1 lead. Nevertheless, Peter Kennedy gave the Thunder some hope with his first goal of the year with 1:38 remaining in the second to make it a 2-2 hockey game.

Ian Keserich made 27 saves for the RiverKings. Jon Horrell stopped 39 shots for the Thunder.

In news off the ice tonight, the RiverKings activated goalie Kyle McNulty from the injured reserve list and waived goalie Kris Tebbs.

The RiverKings host the Brahmas at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m. on Sports 56 WHBQ.
