Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven -- The RiverKings have paired up with First Regional Libraries for the second year in a row to host a book drive, and a night at the RiverKings game. First Regional Libraries, with locations in: DeSoto, Lafayette, Panola, Tate and Tunica Counties, is in need of new children's books.
"We are excited to once again partner with the First Regional Libraries in support of this important book drive," said Nikki Thomas, Account Executive for the Mississippi RiverKings.
"Last year's RiverKings book drive was such a success that we're all really looking forward to this year's event," Judy Card, Youth Services Coordinator for the First Regional Libraries, said. "Book donations go to the library's Summer Library Program. Each child that registers for the program receives a brand new book just for signing up."
"The book drive will benefit the children who use the library but also the people donating. Anyone who brings a book to the February 29 game will receive a special $7 ticket rate for a red level seat," Thomas explained. "Books will be collected at the North and West entrances of the DeSoto Civic Center. Individuals who donate a book at the gate will be handed a $7 red level seating voucher to be redeemed at the box office for that evenings game."
In support of this book drive the RiverKings visited the Southaven First Regional Library location Wednesday, February 13, 2008.
The kids love having the players read to them and thoroughly enjoy seeing another audience member dressed up in the hockey gear. I think the appearances make everyone more enthusiastic for the book drive."
Additional appearances are planned for Sardis Library on February 21, Como and Crenshaw Libraries on February 26 and Olive Branch Library on February 28 (dates subject to change). RiverKings players will stop by the libraries (reliant on availability) to read "Brady, Brady", a children's book series about a little boy who loves and plays hockey. When time permits, the RiverKings players will also dress a child from the audience up in actual hockey gear, explaining the different pieces and their necessity.
"We, my teammates and I, enjoy spending time with the kids," said Louis Dumont, RiverKings Assistant Captain. "The "Brady, Brady" stories share with the kids a new life lesson with each book and at the same time conveys our passion for hockey to the kids in their own terms."
First Regional Libraries plans to use the donated children's books for their summer reading program.
"Kids are encouraged to read throughout the summer to read for fun and to maintain or improve their reading skills," Card continued. "Thanks to the RiverKings and to everyone who helps make this event a success."
