Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs started their player moves for the 2011 season on Wednesday, acquiring outfielder Josh Short in exchange for outfielder Argelis Nunez from the Lake County Fielders in the Northern League.
Short was named the 2010 Northern League Rookie of the Year. Short was the consistent force behind the Lake County Fielders offense, leading the team in batting average, home runs and RBI's.
Short, who finished the season ranked among the league leaders offensively, batted .326 (4th in NL) with 26 home runs (4th in NL) and 84 RBI (2nd in NL). Despite playing his second season of professional baseball, Short was still classified as a rookie per Northern League guidelines. In 2009, Short played with the Kalamazoo Kings in the Frontier League where he finished the year hitting .360 (2nd in FL) while posting 9 home runs and 46 RBI in only 58 games played.
The 6'2, 200-pounder was originally drafted out of high school by the Florida Marlins in the 37th round of the 2005 amateur draft but did not sign. He went on to play collegiately at Mount Hood Community College (Gresham, OR) prior to eventually signing with the Marlins organization in 2007.
"It is very tough to give up a great player like Argelis Nunez but in order to get a quality player you need to give up one as well," said Saltdogs manager Marty Scott. "We believe Josh Short will be a great fit for our organization and our line up every night."
The Saltdogs originally acquired Nunez just hours before the American Association's roster deadline in August of 2009 and he hit .238 with two home runs and six RBI over the season's final ten games. In 2010 he hit .308 in 94 games, set a career high with 22 home runs and driving in a career-best 82.
