Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox announced today the inclusion of field manager John Harris as a featured instructor in the California Winter League. Harris will travel to Palm Springs, California on Tuesday to serve as an instructor for the upcoming 20-game season.

The league is headed by commissioner and 21-year Major League player Darrell Evans. Also joining Harris will be Shreveport-Bossier Captains field manager Ricky VanAsselberg.

Going into the league's second season, four teams will make up the league, consisting of a three-day Spring Training from January 19-21 while the season begins January 22 on through February 18. The championship game will take place on February 19.

Harris' main purpose is to scout players for the upcoming season. The Sox inherited the 2010 roster of the Pensacola Pelicans, who left the American Association and plan to become affiliated in 2012. Despite inheriting the roster, Harris still sees the need to search for additional players.

"In addition to being able to be around active baseball games, I get the opportunity to look at a lot of good, young talent while getting the word out about the Sox," said Harris. "I like having the opportunity to work on a baseball field in the middle of winter."

Harris spent three years with the California Angels in 1979-81 and also sees the opportunity for the league's players to get a chance with a Major League club.

"One day in the middle of the season, the players spend four hours going through a full workout in front of Major League scouts," Harris said. "Lots of these guys are going to get an opportunity to be seen and it gives me an idea of where they stand."
