Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Lincoln Saltdogs wrapped up a rain-shortened exhibition trip to Sioux Falls on Saturday, rallying to tie the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-5. Lincoln's preseason record now stands at 1-0-1.

Lincoln tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, thanks in part to a gift from the Winnipeg defense. Shea McFeely led off the game with a walk, and Deacon Burns doubled him home to make the score 5-4. Lee Rubin lined into a double play, clearing the bases, but Albenis Machado reached on an error. Josh Burrus' single to shallow center moved Machado to third, and Phil Hawke tied things up with an RBI single. The Saltdogs had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth, but left the winning run at third base.

Winnipeg had rallied to overtake the Saltdogs with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, two men out and the Dogs clinging to a 3-2 lead, Cody Ehlers knocked a two-run single to right. The next hitter, Dee Brown, singled up the middle to put the Goldeyes up 5-3.

The Saltdogs scored their first three runs in the second inning, on just two hits. A hit batsman and a walk put runners on first and second for Matt Maloney, who cracked an RBI single to plate the game's first run. McFeely followed with a two-run double, giving Lincoln a 3-0 advantage.

Lincoln's pitching was solid early, as seven hurlers took the hill in the exhibition contest. Starter Jonathan Figueroa pitched two scoreless innings, walking a pair but allowing no hits. Brian Campbell gave up one run in his two innings, but did record three strikeouts. Angel Castro, Carlos Guevara and Khalid Afify each tossed a scoreless frame in their first appearances in a Saltdogs uniform.

Offensively, McFeely finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Steve Alexander went 2-for-3 with a run, and Burrus recorded a 2-for-4 afternoon.

The Saltdogs' scheduled game against Fargo-Moorhead in Sioux Falls on Friday was rained out, so Lincoln finished the 2009 Independent Baseball Showcase with an 0-0-1 record. Because of the rainout, the Dogs will now play a doubleheader against Fargo-Moorhead on Sunday in Beatrice. The first game begins at 1:30pm, with game two scheduled to start at 4pm. The teams will take part in an autograph session between the two games.

The 2009 Lincoln Saltdogs season begins on May 14 in Wichita, with the home opener scheduled for May 22 against Fort Worth. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
