Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries controlled most of their exhibition game with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday night, but a couple of big innings allowed the Birds old rivals to wrap-up the Independent Baseball Showcase with a 7-6 win over the Canaries.
The Canaries scored five runs in batting around during the bottom of the second inning. Cory Harris was hit by a pitch and Ben Van Iderstine singled to put two men on base for Patrick Reilly. Reilly delivered a two-run double to put the Birds on the scoreboard. After stealing third, Reilly scored when Paul Smyth reached on a two-base throwing error by RedHawks shortstop Zach Penprase. Trevor Lawhorn moved Smyth to third on a single, and J.D. Reininger brought Smyth home with a single of his own. The five-run inning was capped off as Lawhorn scored when Alex Bardeguez grounded into a fielder's choice.
Fargo-Moorhead used the long-ball to cut into the Canaries lead in the third. Zach Penprase reached on a two-out throwing error by Canaries shortstop Tim Hutting. Nic Jackson and Carlo Cota followed with back-to-back home runs. At the mid-point of the third inning, the Canaries led by two, 5-3.
The Canaries extended their lead to three runs when J.D. Reininger scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. However, it would be a four-run eighth for the RedHawks that sank the Canaries chance of getting a win on Saturday. After the Canaries relievers walked the bases loaded, Kole Zimmerman hit a two-run single and Kyle Johnson followed with a two-run double. The onslaught took the RedHawks from down 6-3 to up by the eventual final of 7-6.
The Canaries flirted with tying the game in an exciting ninth inning. Ben Van Iderstine opened the inning with a double and got to third on a wild pitch. However strikeouts by Patrick Reilly and Fraser Holmes and a foul out by Trevor Lawhorn left Van Iderstine stranded on third to end the game.
Despite his ninth inning strikeout, Reilly was the Canaries offensive hero, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Beau Torbert also had three hits for the Canaries. Ryan Ford allowed three runs, all unearned, in his three innings of work. Angelo Morales allowed a mere single in his three shutout innings.
The day also featured two other inter-league Independent Baseball match-ups at the Birdcage. The other showcase action saw the Kansas City T-Bones defeated the St. Paul Saints 14-5, and the Lincoln Saltdogs rallied for a 5-5 tie against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
The Canaries finish the exhibition schedule on Sunday in a battle of league champions as the 2008 American Association Champions will take on the 2008 Northern League Champion Kansas City T-Bones in Huron.
