Salotti Stuns Tornadoes, Jackals Win 8-7
July 18, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The biggest story during the series against the New Jersey Jackals has been Nick Salotti's return to Worcester after the Jackals acquired him last Thursday. The story had a big climax near the end, with Salotti crusing a two-run home run to aid the Jackal's sweep of the Tornadoes.
Nick Salotti ended the series 7-for-14, hitting a double and a long ball, along with four runs and six RBI. He is also on a seven game hitting streak, having a hit in every appearance since joining the New Jersey Club.
Jeff Gogal ended up with the win, pitching two scoreless innings after Zach Woods did not record an out and allowed four Tornadoes to score. Gogal allowed two hits and recorded a strikeout, improving to a 5-1 record in 2012.
Nick Serino, who served up the Salotti home run, got tagged with the loss, his fifth of the season. He gave up two hits, a walk and two runs, along with recording a strikeout in his inning of work.
The Jackals scored in the top of the first for the third straight game against the Tornadoes, this time off of Harvard University Product Connor Hulce. Matt Nandin scored from second after Bryan Sabatella hit a ball onto the warning track between Jerod Edmondson and Cameron Monger in right-center field.
The Tornadoes countered in the bottom of the second, after Cam Kneeland knocked in his first professional run when he hit a single through the left side. Alex Nunez, who hit a two out double, scored from second on the play.
The Jackals exploded for four runs in the top of the third. Nick Salotti got one of his three RBI he had in the game when Francisco Caraballo scored on a single. Carlos Guzman then emptied the bases with a three run home run.
Monger lead off the bottom of the fifth with a double, the first leadoff man to have reached base for the tornadoes in the game. Monger later scored after Edmondson hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield. Brandon Pinckney then knocked in Edmondson on a sacrifice fly, cutting the Jackals lead to two at the time.
The Jackals swong right back after Nandin hit a two-out RBI double, increasing their lead back to three after Chris Curran scored on the play.
Then the Tornadoes got a jolt of energy, rallying to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Brockett hit a two-run double that scored Monger and Edmondson. Pinckney then followed with an RBI single, increasing his hitting streak to eleven games. The tornadoes second baseman came into score on a Chris Torres single up the middle, capping a four run surge going into the eighth.
Things seemed to be looking up for the Tornadoes, but that's when Nick Salotti struck back. On a 1-1 pitch, Salotti crushed a ball and flipped the bat before he and Francisco Caraballo took a jog around the basepaths.
Worcester falls to 14-40, getting swept for only the third time in 2012. New Jersey now is 4.5 games behind Les Capitales for first place before the Canadian club's game later on July 18th.
The Tornadoes will now begin a four game series against the Rockland Boulders at Provident Bank Park that starts tomorrow. Southpaw Mike Gedman is scheduled to get the start his fourth of the 2012 season.
