Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies played the first Sunday matinee at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre this afternoon. The Grizzlies defeated the Salmon Kings 3-1, to wrap up the three game weekend series.

Victoria opened the scoring just 5:50 into the game. Forward KC Timmons, who scored a goal and an assist on Friday against Utah, lifted the fans out of their seats when he beat Goaltender Alfie Michaud through the pads. Timmons goal was the cue for the 3703 in attendance, to litter the ice with stuffed bears in the Salmon Kings first annual Teddy Bear Toss. All the bears collected will be distributed to local charities collecting toys for kids this holiday season.

The Grizzlies knotted the game up with just 42 seconds left in the opening period. Rookie Forward Matt Craig scored his team leading 14th goal of the season after Goaltender David Currie made an outstanding save off the first shot, but Currie could not control the rebound, which Craig put past the goalies out-stretched trapper.

Both teams played a conservative second period, with neither team getting anything other than a few scoring chances each, so the score remained tied at one through the second intermission.

Utah Winger Ryan Kinasewich took advantage of the Grizzlies first chance on goal in the third period. Kinasewich picked up a loose puck at the top of the circle to the left of Currie, and he wired the slap-shot passed the goalie's glove hand to give his team the one goal lead.

Craig notched his second goal of the game at 13:40 of the third period to close the score sheet at 3-1 in favour of the Grizzlies. Utah out-shot the Salmon Kings 29-25 and the teams combined 0-7 on the powerplay.

The Victoria Salmon Kings hit the road on Tuesday to Boise, Idaho where they will play the Steelheads on Wednesday December 7, 2005 and again on Friday December 9th and Saturday December 10th. The Salmon Kings next home series begins Friday December 16th against the West Division leading Alaska Aces, who make their first visit to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
