Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Stockton, CA - In a Sunday afternoon matchup at the Stockton Arena the Victoria Salmon Kings took on the Stockton Thunder in the rubber match of a three game set. The Salmon Kings brought a perfect 4-0-0-0 record on Sundays this season into the game. Victoria started Florida Panthers' draft pick David Shantz in net, while the Thunder countered with Saddle Brook, NJ native Zane Kalemba.
The game opened with an early power play opportunity for the Salmon Kings. Victoria almost opened the scoring after Rick Cleaver was set up at the bottom of the right faceoff circle. The Parksville, BC native fired a quick snap shot that rang off the left post and into the corner. The opening 10 minutes saw few whistle stoppages and plenty of flow as the teams jostled for the game's first goal. The Thunder would eventually open the scoring at 11:11 on Chris Lawrence's 15th of the year. The Stockton forward skated into the offensive zone and unleashed a bullet from the left point that beat a partially-screened Shantz high glove. Minutes later Fraser Clair threw the puck out in front of the Salmon King's crease to Jarrett Konkle, but Shantz followed the play and made two consecutive short range saves to deny the Thunder shooter. The Salmon Kings received another power play late in the period, but could not convert on the man advantage after Ryan Turek got the puck in the high slot and fired a shot just past the outside of the right post. Despite Victoria's pressure late in the period, Stockton held an 11-7 shot lead as they took their 1-0 advantage into the second.
Victoria controlled the opening minutes of the second frame as they looked to equalize the game, but Stockton would counter for their second goal. Craig Valette fed the puck from behind the Salmon Kings' net to Clair in the slot. The former Barrie Colt snapped a quick a shot that beat Shantz high glove for his 16th at 5:12. The Thunder started to take control of the game as they pinned the Salmon Kings in their own zone for the next five minutes. After a Garet Hunt penalty Victoria looked to cut the Stockton lead in half on their third man advantage of the night. The Salmon Kings cycled the puck around, but could not best the Thunder penalty killers. At 15:05, Cameron Brodie threw a harmless looking shot on net that made it through a maze of bodies and past Shantz. The marker was Brodie's second of the year. Victoria was awarded a 5-on-3 man advantage with four minutes remaining after Jim McKenzie took exception to a Matt Stefanishion hit behind the play, while Daryl Marcoux was taken to the penalty box for tripping. The Salmon Kings looked to get back in the game on the two man advantage, but could not crack Kalemba in the Stockton net. Stockton took their 3-0 lead into the third period.
The third period opened with lots of flow and pace as the Salmon Kings looked to get back in the game. Lawrence would take the momentum back for the home side on the man advantage as he took the puck in the high slot and snipped a shot into the right corner at 6:29 for his second on the night off. Tempers continued after a whistle late in the frame when two separate fights broke out. Jordan Bendfeld jumped on Matt Stefanishion to fight, but the linesman intervened quickly. Gord Burnett also dropped the gloves with Clair in a spirited tilt that saw both players land blows. The Salmon Kings received a three minute power play after the fights and penalties were sorted out. Victoria looked to break the shutout bid for Kalemba, but could not solve the Stockton keeper in the final minutes. Thunder 4 Salmon Kings 0
Victoria went 0/6 0.0% on the power play, while Stockton was 1/4 25.0%. The Thunder outshot the Salmon Kings 25-24.
Victoria will now return home to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for a two-game set against the Utah Grizzlies Friday February 25th and Saturday February 26th. Game time for both game is at 7:05 pm. For tickets call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
