Salmon Kings ice Steelheads in OT victory
March 11, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC â With the home schedule winding down for the Victoria Salmon Kings and the fans at Bear Mountain Arena looking for the glimmer of hope, goaltender Robert Muntain stood on his head, and led his team to the 3-2 overtime victory over the Idaho Steelheads.
Muntain was shelled in his first start in professional hockey, giving up six goals in just two periods, but all that quickly went away as he built a wall in front of his net, making 38 saves in his second game.
Chris Corrinet scored his second shorthanded goal of the season in the second period after the Salmon Kings and the Steelheads played to a scoreless draw in the first. Corrinet's stalwart play as a defenseman earned him the âA' on his jersey and he has continued show why the reward was justified.
The Salmon Kings took the 1-0 lead to the dressing room after playing 40 solid minutes. At 10:25 of the third period Bobby Russell extended his lead in team scoring with his 19th, from Matt Elich and Jonathan Zion.
Just over a minute and a half later Alexey Glukhov scored the most beautiful goal of the season at Bear Mountain. Another solid night from the Russian forward was capped as he took matters into his own hands, undressing the Idaho defense at the blueline, then beating goaltender Frank Doyle upstairs to give the Salmon Kings the lead.
Then with eleven second left in the third Lance Galbraith beat Muntain, from Darrell Hay and Scott Burt to send the teams to the extra frame.
But the wind was not out of the Salmon Kings sails. At 1:37 of the overtime, Mike Josephson and Corrinet fed Ryan Wade who circled around the net into the slot, and beat Doyle to ice the Steelheads.
The final Victoria Salmon Kings home game is against the Steelheads on Saturday March 12th. Tickets for the final game and fan appreciation day are available online at www.selectyourtickets.com or by phone at 250-220-7777.
