Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Ontario, CA - In a Saturday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Ontario Reign met in the second of a two-game weekend set at the Citizens Business Bank Arena. The Salmon Kings started John Murray in net while the Reign countered with Curtis Darling.
The Reign got on the board first via a power play goal from Tony Voce. The Kings' Patrick Coulombe picked up a loose puck in the right wing corner and fired it in behind the net. Laying in wait was the Reign's Tim Kraus. The Reign forward picked off the Coulombe pass and he fired the puck out front to Voce who made no mistake sniping the blocker corner for the 1-0 lead. The Reign made it 2-0 when Victoria's Randall Gelech fired a shot from the high slot on the power play. The puck deflected off the Reign's John Rheault's pads and bounced into the neutral zone where Shawn Germain picked up the puck to lead Ontario on a three-on-one break. Germain came down the right side and fired a puck at Murray who made a right pad save, but the rebound landed right on Rheault's stick and he buried it in the gaping net for the shorthanded goal. Ontario held a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.
Victoria would respond with a goal to cut the Reign lead to 2-1 when Andy Brandt would streak down the right side and fired a puck that found its way through Darling's legs. Ontario would regain their two goal advantage when Dwight King skated in on a two-on-one. The Reign forward wound up at the left face-off dot and wired a shot over the glove of Murray. Victoria answered back with a late power play goal when Chad Painchaud let a wrist shot go from the top of the left circle that found the back of the net. The Reign led 3-2 after 40 minutes.
Ontario jumped out quickly with a power play goal of their own when Robert Pearce notched his first professional goal tipping in a Shawn Germain point shot in the period's first two minutes. The Kings would move to within one on a highlight reel goal by Chad Painchaud. The Victoria forward picked up the puck and cut to the left, he then pulled the puck hard to the right leaving the Reign defenseman in his wake before cutting back to the left and sliding the puck into the empty cage behind Darling who bit on the move to the right as well. The Salmon Kings applied the pressure but could not find the equalizer. Reign 4 salmon Kings 3.
Victoria finished 1/10 10.0% on the power play while Ontario went 2/6 33.3%. The Salmon Kings out shot the Reign 36-24.
Victoria returns to the Save-On-Foods-Memorial Centre to take on the same Ontario team next week with games on Wednesday, November 11th, Friday, November 13th, and Saturday, November 14th. Puck-drop for all three games it 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
