MYRTLE BEACH, SC (Saturday, June 9) - The Salem Red Sox couldn't withstand wave after wave of scoring from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Saturday night, and were washed away in a 10-3 loss at TicketReturn.com Field.

Salem (28-30) gave up eight unanswered runs and had a stretch of 11 straight batters not reaching base in the game. Myrtle Beach (32-29) stayed scorching hot for their eighth consecutive victory.

Salem struck immediately in the top of the first against Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Tyson Miller (W, 6-4). Leadoff man Santiago Espinal engaged in a long battle at the plate, fouling off seven straight pitches at one point before lining a double to left field. Brett Netzer came through behind his teammate, lining a single to center to plate Espinal and give the Sox a 1-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach drew level in the bottom of the second against Salem starter Tanner Houck (L, 2-7), who gave up a leadoff double to Kevonte Mitchell. Connor Myers bounced out to short, advancing Mitchell to third, and Luis Ayala lined a single into center, scoring Mitchell and tying the game at 1-1.

The Pelicans moved ahead in the bottom of the third. Austin Upshaw and Andruw Monasterio cracked consecutive singles to put runners at first and third, and Upshaw zipped home when Aramis Ademan bounced into a double play, making it a 2-1 lead for the Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Leadoff man Wladimir Galindo reached on catcher's interference by Jordan Procyshen, and Kevante Mitchell hammered a two-run blast to left, running the lead to 4-1.

The Pelicans blew the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth. Ayala led off by beating out an infield single to the right side, and Houck was pulled for reliever Daniel Gonzalez. Tyler Pearson reached on an error by Espinal at short, and Upshaw bunted the runners ahead on a sacrifice. Monasterio slashed a single to center to score Ayala, and with two outs, P.J. Higgins ripped a double to left to plate Monasterio and Pearson. Galindo kept the train rolling with an RBI single. When the dust cleared, the Sox trailed 8-1.

Salem drew a little closer in the top of the seventh against reliever Tyler Peyton. Procyshen led off with a single, and moved to second on a groundout to third by Trenton Kemp. Carlos Tovar hit a bouncer to short that Ademan misplayed, and Espinal worked a walk to load the bases. Netzer lined a single into center field to score Procyshen and Tovar, trimming the lead to 8-3.

The Pelicans responded in the bottom of the eighth. With Upshaw at third and Higgins at second with two outs, Galindo laced a single up the left field line, scoring the runners and handing the Pelicans their final 10-3 advantage.

Houck allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks in five innings, whiffing six and tossing two wild pitches. Gonzalez was touched up for five runs (two earned) on seven hits over three frames, striking out one.

The Sox will try to avoid the sweep Sunday evening, with southpaw Darwinzon Hernandez taking the ball against Pelicans righty Erick Leal. First pitch from TicketReturn.com Field is at 6:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 5:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
