Spokane Indians News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - Andrew Suarez kept Spokane hitters confused all night, allowing one hit with two strikeouts as he led the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes to a 5-0 victory over the Indians on Thursday night at Avista Stadium in front of 4,647 fans. It was Grand Slam F-150 Sweepstakes presented by Gus Johnson Ford and KIX 96.1.
The San Francisco Giants put their top two 2015 MLB Draft picks on display Thursday night. Suarez - drafted in the second round out of Miami University - faced the minimum in five innings pitched, throwing only 52 pitches with two strikeouts to earn his first professional win. The Giants' first-round pick, first baseman Chris Shaw, joined in with a moonshot home run that left the ballpark, well over the right field wall.
Salem-Keizer's Nathanael Santiago and Ryan Halstead combined to allow one hit in four innings of relief.
Spokane struggled to get on base during the game, with Salem-Keizer pitchers facing the minimum through 7.2 innings. Spokane's lone base runner - courtesy of a LeDarious Clark single - was eliminated by a double play. Diego Cedeno connected on a liner to center field in the seventh.
Indians starter Emerson Martinez gave up two quick runs in a 32-pitch first inning, and allowed one more in the third. After four innings, five hits and three walks, Dario Beltre was summoned from the bullpen.
Beltre didn't fare well either, giving up Shaw's home run in his first batter faced. The following hitter, Jose Vizcaino Jr., laid down a bunt and reached second on a throwing error by the right-handed pitcher. Beltre would finish after two innings, allowing three total hits and striking out three batters.
Jason Richman allowed one hit and recorded a strikeout in the seventh. John Kukuruda allowed three hits and one run in the eighth. Kohsuke Tomita pitched a scoreless ninth.
Game 3 against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes is tomorrow night, Friday, August 14th, for the 2015 season's final installment of Yoke's $1 Family Feast Nights, presented by Yoke's Fresh Market and 92.9 ZZU.
