The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes beat the Spokane Indians 5-0 Thursday night in Spokane. It was the Volcanoes second win in as many games in Spokane and third straight overall.
Salem-Keizer grabbed an early 2-0 lead for the second straight game Thursday night in Spokane. Starter Andy Suarez (1-0, 1.40 ERA) faced the minimum amount of batters in five innings of work. The second-round pick out of Miami struck out two and did not allow a walk.
The Volcanoes first run came in the top of the first when Chris Shaw laced a double to right field and Ronnie Jebavy, who reached on a single, scored from first. Shaw later scored on a Fernando Pujadas ground out. Shaw's impressive night continued in the top of the fifth when he smashed a Dario Beltre fastball out of Avista Stadium for his fifth home run of the season.
Emerson Martinez (4-4, 5.01 ERA), the Spokane starter, lasted four innings giving up two runs in the loss.
The Indians only hit off of Suarez came from their leadoff man LeDarious Clark in the first inning. Spokane did not record its second hit until the bottom of the eighth inning off of Nate Santiago. Santiago provided quality relief going three innings and allowing only one hit.
Ryan Halstead completed the shutout performance for the Volcanoes. In the ninth inning Halstead retired all three batters he faced and struck out Clark to end the game. The Salem-Keizer pitching staff faced just 28 batters throughout the game, only one over the minimum.
