After scoring 30 runs in their first series against the Hillsboro Hops, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes maintained the offensive eruption Monday night in the first matchup against the Boise Hawks. The Volcanoes recorded 13 hits and seven runs in the series opener against Northwest League South Division opponent.
Volcanoes' catcher John Riley stole the show, going 5-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Hitting cleanup, Riley started off the memorable night with a double in the top of the first inning. The catcher then singled in the fourth, sixth, doubled in the eighth inning, and then singled again in the ninth. Riley's performance pushed his season batting average to .538.
The Volcanoes scored one run in the first after center fielder Juan Rodriguez reached on a throwing error by the Hawks' third baseman. First baseman Leo Rojas then singled to score Rodriguez.
The Hawks tied it up in the bottom of the second inning after designated hitter Jacob Bosiokovic walked, then driven in by a line drive single from catcher Wilkyns Jimenez.
The game slowed down after that, with no runners scoring until the eighth inning. The Volcanoes exploded again for the third time in three days, scoring six runs on five hits, a wild pitch and an error on the Hawks shortstop.
The fun-filled inning started with a pair of singles from shortstop Manuel Geraldo and Rodriguez before first baseman Zack Bowers singled to bring Geraldo home. Riley then got his second double of the game to score Rodriguez on the play. Bowers then scored on a wild pitch from Hawks' starter Antonio Santos before left fielder Gustavo Cabrera was hit by a pitch. After a Hawks' pitching change, right fielder Ashford Fulmer forced an error by the shortstop to score Riley. Second baseman Kevin Rivera then doubled, scoring both Cabrera and Fulmer.
That was all Salem-Keizer needed to win the ball game, as the Hawks were only able to get a run in the bottom half of the frame when shortstop Garrett Hampson tripled and then scored on a fielder's choice.
Riley stole the show, but Volcanoes' starter Melvin Adon pitched phenomenally as he pitched six full innings, striking out six batters and not allowing an earned run.
The Volcanoes will look to continue their hot streak as they play two more games against the Hawks before coming home for a five game home stand against the Tri-City Dust Devils. The Volcanoes will have to take care of business in order to win the series, but have put themselves in a great spot to win another series early in the season.
The Volcanoes' Mac Marshall is scheduled to start tomorrow night against the Boise Hawks as Salem-Keizer look to go 4-1 for the first time since 2013 when they started 5-0.
