Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - For the first six innings of Monday night's game out at Scotiabank Field, it could have been considered to be "anyone's game", but by the time the dust had settled, Everett walked away with a lopsided 10-0 shellacking of the Canadians to open up the 2016 home schedule.

RHP Pat Murphy was dominant for Vancouver in his first start of the season going six innings, allowing just one earned run in the loss. It was Murphy's first start since 2014 as he had been battling a series of injuries that cost him nearly two calendar years. After giving up a pair of runs in the 2nd inning, Murphy would retire 11 straight Aquasox to keep the C's within striking distance.

On the other side of the ball, Everett starter RHP Ljay (el-jay) Newsome might have actually been better going seven shutout innings striking out six while limiting the Canadians to just a pair of hits in the victory. Everett reliever LHP Joselito Cano went the final two innings allowing just one hit in the lopsided final.

Canadians CF J.B. Woodson made his professional debut after the Blue Jays selected him in the 2nd round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft and in his first at-bat, collected one of the two hits off of Newsome. His ground-rule double came with a bit of controversy as Everett RF Gus Craig fumbled around in the Aquasox bullpen to find the ball while Woodson rounded the bases going all the way home before he was sent back to second base. Woodson would finish 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

Vancouver 1B Christian Williams saw his three-game hit streak come to an end after going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. In his final plate appearance, he was hit by Cano.

With the loss, the Canadians fall to 2-2 (.500) on the Northwest League season while Everett climbs back to .500 with the win. The last time these two teams met in Vancouver for a home opener was in 2009 when the Aquasox topped the Canadians 10-1.

These two teams meet again on Tuesday, June 21st at 7:05pm with the Canadians sending RHP Luis Sanchez (0-0, 0.00) to the mound in search of the C's third win of the season, and first at home.
