Atlanta Gladiators News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Peter Sakaris scored two goals 23 seconds apart in the third, and the Evansville IceMen snuck by the GwinnettGladiators 4-3 Tuesday night at the Ford Center.
A scoreless opening period saw a solid scrap between Gwinnett's Brett Lyon and Guy Lepine, but despite outshooting the IceMen (18-9-3-1) 14-7 the Gladiators (14-21-0-2) couldn't find the back of the net.
That was certainly not the case in the middle period. Rob Kwiet opened the scoring at 2:22, ripping a point shot past a screened Mike Clemente with Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Marshall Everson picking up the assists. Evansville would answer just 62 seconds later, with Patrick Kennedy beating Karpowich glove side with a long shot.
Evansville gained the lead at 11:14 on the power play, with Josh Beaulieu cross-checking down a Gladiator defenseman, freeing up enough space to wrist a shot high glove side past Karpowich.
Gwinnett bounced back late in the stanza. Josh Currie worked his way to the high slot in theEvansville zone, and launched a wrister over the glove of Clemente with just 18.6 seconds remaining in the period. Antoine Corbin and Lyon helped set the play up.
Justin Weller put the Gladiators ahead 4:53 into the third, as his point shot sailed over theblocker of Clemente with Currie assisting. The IceMen would get two quick goals just 23 seconds apart from Sakaris at 9:33 and 9:56, however, to squeak out a 4-3 win.
The Gladiators are next in action Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Cincinnati as they take on the Cyclones at US Bank Arena.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
