Saints Week in Review

February 3, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

Coming Up This Week – The head back out on the road again this week with two games in Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday nights. With the team on the road the rest of the month, the ice in the San Angelo coliseum is being removed Feb. 3rd – so the team will be practicing in Odessa in the coming weeks.

Week In Review – The Saints went 1-1-0 this week with a home win over Tulsa and a home loss to El Paso.

Saints in the City – The Saints players continue to participate in Awards Ceremonies for all the San Angelo elementary schools’ Accelerated Reader Programs. Saints players will then be back in our elementary schools for “Grades for Blades” program in the elementary schools for the February report cards. We also have players going out to talk to juvenile offenders at our area Juvenile Detention Center.

January 31st / Tulsa 1 - San Angelo 7 / The Saints kicked off the weekend in grand style with a convincing 7-1 win over the Oilers. After weathering an early storm of shots by the Oilers, the Saints truck twice in the 1st period with goals by Chris Peach and Steve Roberts. Jeff Cheeseman, Peach and Roberts would add goals in the 2nd period while Brad Cook and Cheeseman finished out the scoring in the 3rd. The line of Peach, Roberts and Cory Pecush combined for 8 points (4G, 4A) while Cheeseman had a 4 point night (2G, 2A). Goaltender Bryce Wandler came just one fluky deflected goal from a shut-out. The game was also marked by 91 PIMs on just 10 penalties.

February 1st / El Paso 5 - San Angelo 0 / The Saints looked like a completely different team Saturday night as the El Paso Buzzards shut them out 5-0. The Buzzards scored 3 goals on their first 7 shots of the 1st period and the Saints failed to convert on quality scoring chances in every period. Former Saints goalie Jamie Ronayne regained some of the form that had him starting for the Saints earlier in the season – and shut-out his old team with 31 saves, several of the spectacular variety. This loss put a serious dent in the Saints’ dwindling playoff hopes as they now trail Lubbock, Corpus Christi, New Mexico and El Paso for the final playoff spot in the South Conference.

Playoff Picture – The Saints had a great start to the weekend as they beat Tulsa Friday night while New Mexico, Corpus Christi and Lubbock were all losing. But, then lost ground again Saturday night with a loss to El Paso combined with wins by Corpus Christi and New Mexico. Corpus Christi currently holds the 4th and final playoff spot with 44 points – followed closely by Lubbock at 43 points and New Mexico at 42. El Paso jumped back into the race with 3 wins this weekend and now has 34 points while the Saints have 32.

Injury Report – Jan Jas, Kelly Miller and Jason Abel remain out of the line-up due to injury. But, the Saints should be able to take a pretty full line-up to Indianapolis for their two games this coming weekend.
