SCORPIONS RECAP
AMARILLO 7, SCORPIONS 0 â The Gorillas skated to a 7-0 win over the Scorpions on Thursday, breaking out to a 3-0 lead after the first period and not looking back. Scott Myers made 21 saves in goal for the Scorpions.
EL PASO 5, SCORPIONS 4 (SO) â The Buzzards stormed back to take a 5-4 shootout win on Friday. Pete Brearley led the Scorps with two goals and one assist, while Tyler Baines and Ben Gorewich each picked up a goal and an assist. Luciano Caravaggio made 44 saves. After killing off a Buzzards power play in overtime, the Scorps were unable to find the back of the net in the shootout and El Paso scored twice for the win.
SCORPIONS 7, LUBBOCK 3 â The Scorpions jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period and cruised to a 7-3 win over the Cotton Kings. The Scorpions got a boost from their special teams, scoring two power play and two shorthanded goals in the game. SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS
AMARILLO â The Scorpions are 2-4 against the Gorillas this season, and looking for revenge after Thursday's loss in the second meeting in six days. The Gorillas dropped a pair of road games at Odessa on Friday and Oklahoma City on Saturday. Henry Kuster leads the Gorillas in scoring with 41 points (23g-18a), with Dorian Anneck (14g-25a-39pts) right behind. Goalie Steve Debus is 15-7-1 with a 2.62 GAA while Shawn Degagne is 11-8-0 with a 2.63 GAA. The Gorillas are the fourth-best defensive team in the CHL, allowing just 2.81 goals per game.
MEMPHIS â The teams meet for the very first time on Friday, having not played each other last season. The defending President's Cup champions have struggled lately, losing four in a row and going 1-5-1 in their last seven. Friday's game also marks the return of Ben Gorewich, Kris Currie and Jeff Alcombrack, who were acquired by the Scorpions from Memphis in early January. Reigning league MVP Don Parsons leads the CHL with 37 goals and 73 points. Kahlil Thomas is next with 49 points (19g-30a) while Derek Landmesser is tied for fourth among CHL defensemen with 40 points (8g-32a). Rookie goalie Jean-Francois Racine (17-7-2, 2.70 GAA) shares the duties with veteran Mark Richards (9-10-1, 3.06 GAA).
BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT â The Scorpions meet Bossier-Shreveport for the only time on Saturday as the Mudbugs don't travel to Albuquerque this season. The Mudbugs are hot, having won three straight games and eight of their last nine. This team is led by longtime Mudbugs, including Dan Wildfong (17g-26a-43pts) at the top and followed closely by Jason Campbell (20g-21a-41pts) and Forbes MacPherson (20g-19a-39pts). Former WPHL Goalie and Rookie of the Year Ken Carroll is 16-10-4 with a 2.22 GAA while Jonathan Forest is 5-6-4 with a 3.24 GAA.
FORT WORTH â The Scorpions finish a busy weekend with their second and final meeting of the season with the Brahmas on Sunday. The Scorps took a 6-2 win at Tingley Coliseum on Oct. 26, and the Brahmas are a vastly different team. Bill Inglis took over the coaching duties from Todd Lalonde just prior to New Year's, as the Brahmas are 1-19-1 in their last 21 games. Joe Van Volsen lead the Brahmas with 42 points (13g-29a), with Chad Woollard (23g-17a-40pts) on his tail. The Brahmas are last in the CHL averaging just 2.14 goals per game, while 14th allowing 4.11 goals per contest. Goalies Jason Fricker (2-14-0, 4.11 GAA) and Erasmo Saltarelli (0-3, 7.21 GAA) tend to the net.
McDONALD CLOSES IN â Scorpions coach Bill McDonald needs one more win to reach 400 for his coaching career. The 49 year-old Thunder Bay, Ontario native is 399-274-82 in 12 years of coaching. The Scorpions are 7-9-3 since his arrival on Dec. 16.
STINGERS â McDonald and new Fort Worth coach Bill Inglis are no strangers... Inglis was the General Manager of the IHL's Michigan K-Wings while McDonald was the coach there from 1998 to 2000... With his shorthanded goal on Saturday, Arturs Kupaks is back atop the CHL defensemen with three shorthanded goals this season... Craig Stahl had a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" on Saturday with a goal, an assist and a fight... Tyler Baines and Pete Brearley each have five points in their last two games. Brearley had two goals and an assist on Friday plus a goal and an assist on Saturday while Baines had a goal and assist on Friday then tallied and picked up two helpers on Saturday... Ben Gorewich has four goals and seven points in ten games since joining the Scorpions in a trade with Memphis on Jan. 6... Luciano Caravaggio needs three wins to tie Tony Martino for the team's all-time mark.
