Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - For the second time in as many home games, the Fighting Saints and their fans teamed up to support a worthy cause. A live jersey auction after Friday's 2-1 win over Chicago grossed $11,125 for the Veteran's Freedom Center in Dubuque.
Camouflage jerseys for all twenty-three Fighting Saints players were auctioned, with team captain and expected first-round NHL draft pick Zemgus Girgensons' jersey leading the way with a winning bid of $975. In all, nine jerseys were sold for more than $500 at the auction. The special edition jerseys, worn only in Friday's game, display the distinctive Fighting Saints crest on a camouflage background, with camouflage fleurs-des-lis featured along the bottom border of the jerseys.
Throughout the evening, displays of patriotism honoring active military members and veterans were prominent throughout the Mystique Community Ice Center. As the Fighting Saints were introduced during the pregame ceremonies, each member of the starting lineup carried out a flag honoring one of the branches of the armed forces. With many current and former members of the military present in the season-high crowd of 3,044, there was a distinct military flavor to the proceedings throughout the evening. Radio Dubuque's 101 The River sponsored the evening, which marked the Fighting Saints first time wearing camouflage jerseys.
The Veteran's Freedom Center, which opened its doors less than a year ago, provides military veterans with opportunities to bond with others who have served, relax, and learn new skills. The Center operates at no cost to the veterans who utilize it. It is located at the corner of Washington and 19th streets in Dubuque.
