Saints Reel off Sixth Straight Victory with 17-5 Thumping of Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MB - The 12-hour bus ride from Lincoln to Winnipeg didn't seem to bother the St. Paul Saints on Sunday evening. They arrived in town just four and a half hours before game time, but the offense was as fresh as if they had an entire day off. All nine starters collected a hit, six with a multi-hit game, as they pounded out a season tying high 21. Eight of nine starters collected an RBI and scored a run in a 17-5 thrashing of the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park. The win is the sixth in a row for the Saints as they improved to a season high 20-games over .500 at 53-33.

With the game tied at one in the fourth, the Saints blew the game open with their first six run inning of the night. Josh Allen reached on a fielding error by shortstop Adrian Marin. Chesny Young followed with a walk to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Chris Baker was asked to sacrifice, but his bunt was fielded by pitcher Parker French who threw to third for the force out. French departed for reliever Joel Bender, whom the Saints scored six runs off of in a 0.1 inning start just five days ago. After getting Mike Aiello to line out to left, the offense had flashbacks to August 13. Dan Motl gave the Saints a 2-1 lead with an RBI single to left. Michael Lang made it 3-1 with an RBI single. Brady Shoemaker's single to center scored Motl increasing the lead to 4-1. Jabari Henry finished the scoring with a three-run homer to right, his first of the season, making it 7-1 and chasing Bender.

With the Saints up 7-2 in the fifth Josh Allen led off the inning with a solo blast to left, his 16th of the season, making it 8-2.

In the sixth the Saints sent nine men to the plate for the second time in three innings. Lang led off with a triple to right and scored on Shoemaker's single to left-center making it 9-2. Henry was hit by a pitch which chased reliever Tyler Garkow. Left-hander Christian Torres came out of the bullpen and retired the first two hitters, but a single by Chesny Young loaded the bases. Baker drove home a pair with a single to center upping the lead to 11-2.

The Goldeyes got all three runs back in the bottom of the inning when Dominic Ficociello hit a three-run homer to right, his second of the game and ninth of the season, cutting the lead to 11-5.

The Saints put the game away in the ninth when they sent 12 men to the plate and scored six runs for the second time in the game. Baker led off the inning with a single. With one out Motl singled to center. Lang's two-run double gave the Saints a 13-5 lead. Lang finished the game 3-6, falling a home run shy of the cycle, with three RBI and three runs scored. Shoemaker followed with an RBI single making it 14-5. He finished the game 4-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. With two outs John Silviano was hit by a pitch and Allen singled to load the bases. A walk to Young forced in a run and Baker finished the scoring with a two-run double. He finished the night 4-6 with a double, career tying high five RBI and two runs scored.

Reliever Chris Lee went 2.0 hitless, shutout innings of relief while striking out five of the six outs he recorded.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the two game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at Shaw Park. The Saints send RHP Landon Beck (4-2, 3.54) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Kevin McGovern (11-6, 3.65). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
