St. Paul Saints News Release

LINCOLN, NE (July 24, 2007) - Not many people outside of Chester, Pennsylvania could tell you anything about Widener University, but Brian Campbell represented his alma-mater with pride on Tuesday night as the St. Paul Saints were one hit in a 2-0 loss at Haymarket Park.

Campbell made his Saltdogs debut with his only professional experience coming in the now defunct New York States League this season. He was pitching at the Division III school prior to that and did nothing, but get outs against the Saints. The lone hit came in the fourth when Brian Sprout lined a clean single to right field. Campbell went 7.0 innings allowing one hit while walking four and striking out three to earn the victory.

The Saints had their big opportunity in the first when they loaded the bases on two walks and an error. With one out Sprout hit a liner to second which Corey Patton jumped, caught and doubled off Marcel Longmire at first to end the inning. That appeared to give Campbell confidence the rest of the way.

The Saints offense, which was hitting .199 in its last five games and .238 in July, didn't have a runner reach second base over the final eight innings.

Saints starter Justin Lord was nearly as solid as Campbell, but he made two mistakes. In the fifth inning Patton hit a solo homer over the right field wall, his third of the season, giving the Saltdogs a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth Pichi Balet blasted a solo homer over the left field wall, his fifth of the season, making it 2-0. Lord went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four.

The same two teams meet Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Adam Brandenburg (5-2, 3.22) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Dan Reichert (6-4, 4.94). There is no radio, but the game can be heard online at saintsbaseball.com.
