Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pelicans and Diablos used two home runs to account for five of tonight's seven runs. Both teams used the 8th and 9th innings to score with the Diablos topping Pensacola 4-3 in front of 1,538 fans.

El Paso scored the games first runs in the 3rd inning. With two outs and Kory Drew and Jorge Alvarez on base, Walter Olmstead hit a 1-2 pitch deep to center for a three-run home run, his 7th of the season.

Pelicans' second baseman Cesar Aranguren brought the Pelicans to within one with a monster two-run homer to left field. Bo Williams led off the inning with a ground rule double to left field. Three batters later, with two outs, Aranguren hit his 2nd home run of the season.

Jesen Merle, Pelicans starting pitcher, settled down after giving up the home run in the 3rd inning. The righty went onto retire the side in order the next three innings using four ground balls to third base and three strikeouts.

In the top of the 7th, El Paso threatened with two runners on base with two outs. Centerfielder Kory Drew hit a sharp sinking line drive to left center for a sure bet RBI hit. Out of nowhere, Pelicans left fielder Napoleon Calzado came diving in to snag the hit out of the air, ending the threat and the inning.

The Pelicans used two infield hits in the 8th inning to tie the game at 3. Aranguren hit a one-hopper up the middle before second baseman Joel Izquierdo got a glove on it. With two outs and Aranguren on third base, Calzado drove in the tying run with an infield single between shortstop and third base.

In the 9th, the Diablos scored the winning run off an RBI single from Albenis Machado, making the final score 4-3.
