Olmstead, Valentin Named Players Of The Week

DURHAM, NC - El Paso Diablos 1B Walter Olmstead and Fort Worth Cats RHP Dan Valentin were named American Association Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of July 16th-July 22nd by PA-Sportsticker, the official statistician of the American Association.

Olmstead continues to have a solid season for the first half champion Diablos. In four games this past week, Olmstead hit .563 (9-for-16) with one home run, eight RBI, three doubles and three runs scored. He also had a .938 slugging percentage along with an on-base percentage of .588. The San Antonio native for the season is batting .368 with six home runs, 47 RBI and 93 hits. The all-star first baseman is in the top three in the league in seven different offensive categories.

The 26-year-old was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 2002 MLB draft. He spent four seasons in the Reds organization playing for Billings, Dayton and Sarasota.

This is the second straight week a Fort Worth pitcher has received Player of the Week honors (Cory Walters). Valentin was sensational in his only outing this past Friday as he pitched a complete game one hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a 5-0 win over the Pensacola Pelicans. Valentin is 4-2 this season with a 3.90 ERA in 55 1/3 innings pitched.

Valentin is now in his sixth season of professional baseball. He has spent his entire career in independent baseball playing with clubs such as Washington, Rio Grande, Edinburg, Sioux Falls, Laredo and his present team, Fort Worth.
