St. Paul Saints News Release

FORT WORTH, TX (July 15, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints faced one of the best pitchers in the American Association in Fort Worth Cats All-Star Jae Jung. Digging an early six run hole didn't help as they lost 6-4 on Wednesday night at LaGrave Field.

The Saints gave up six runs in the first two innings as the Cats put up three in the first when Brian Fryer led off with a walk, stole second and was singled to third by Cameron Blair. Michael Bell knocked home Blair with a single. After a wild pitch moved Blair to third, Pat O'Sullivan scored him with a ground out to third. Ryan Patterson finished the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to center.

In the second the Cats matched their first inning total as Isa Garcia led off with a double. With one out Fryer singled him home to make it 4-0. Cameron Blair then hit a two-run homer to left, his first of the season, to make it 6-0. Saints starter Mitch Wylie lasted just 4.0 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three.

The Saints didn't do much against Jung as he retired the first 11 men he faced until Josh Alley singled to left-center with two out in the fourth. The Saints finally broke through in the sixth when Scott Knazek reached on a two base throwing error by third baseman Bell. Steve Butler singled him to third. Alex Fonseca's grounder back to the mound forced Knazek at the plate. After Anthony Norman grounded out to first, moving the runners to second and third, Alley singled home both runners to make it 6-2.

The Saints got to within three in the eighth when Knazek led off against Jung with a single to left-center. Jung then walked Steve Butler before departing the game. Two batters later Norman's sacrifice fly made it 6-3. Jung went 7.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out four.

In the ninth the Saints would have a chance against closer Gary Lee. With one out Brent Krause singled to center and Jeff Eure walked. Andrew Schmiesing followed with an RBI single and the Saints had the tying runs at first and second. Knazek was caught looking on strikes and then was tossed for arguing and Steve Butler grounded out to second to end the game.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series at LaGrave Field on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send their All-Star RHP Brandon Kintzler (8-2, 2.41) against Cats RHP Ryan Trytter (0-1, 6.05). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
