St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 29, 2008) - Mark Scott would have been a great choice to broadcast the game between the Sioux Falls Canaries and St. Paul Saints on Sunday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium as the teams combined for eight homers, a league record tying six from the Canaries, as the Saints lost 7-4.

The Canaries tied a record set by Sioux City on June 22, 2006 against the Saints. The home run derby began in the first when Tim Hutting hit a solo shot to left, his third of the season to make it 1-0.

The Saints tied it in the second when Brent Krause walked, moved to third on a single to left by Heath Keel. Two batters later Steve Butler hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one.

In the third the Canaries took a 4-1 lead. Hutting drew a two out walk and Grant Richardson hit his first of two homers, a two-run shot to right, his sixth of the season. The next batter Josh Patton hit a solo homer to right, his eighth of the season.

The Saints cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth when Brent Krause led off with a single to right. Keel followed with a two-run shot to right, his second as a Saint and seventh of the season. Keel finished the game 4-4 with two singles, a double and a homer, two RBI and a run scored.

Andrew Barbaro hit a solo homer in the fifth, his first of the season to put the Canaries up 5-3.

The Saints answered back with a solo homer of their own in the top of the sixth when Kevin Sullivan hit it out to right, his sixth of the season.

The Canaries, however, added two more solo homers, Beau Tobert in the sixth, his 11th of the season and Richardson's second of the game and seventh of the season. It was the second time in the four game series Richardson had homered twice in a game and he finished the series with five long balls. The Canaries have now hit 22 homers against the Saints in just 10 games this season.

The Saints finished the first half 24-24 and in third place. The Saints have Monday off and the second half of the season begins on Tuesday night as every team starts back at 0-0. The Saints will play a three game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (8-1, 2.97). It is Happy Canada Day! The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
