Canaries Tie Two Records In 7-4 Win

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (31-17) tied the franchise record for wins in a half and tied the American Association record for home runs in a game, while closing out the first half with a 7-4 victory over the Saints on Sunday afternoon at the Birdcage. The Canaries were led offensively by Grant Richardson who hit two of the team's six home runs in the game.

The Canaries scored first as they have in every game of the series with St. Paul. Tim Hutting hit his third home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the first inning and give the Canaries a 1-0 lead.

St. Paul answered in the top of the second. Brent Krause led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Heath Keel. Steve Butler hit a sacrifice fly to plate Krause and tie the game, 1-1.

In the bottom of the third the Canaries erupted for three runs, all coming with two outs. Hutting walked, and Richardson and Josh Patton followed with back-to-back home runs. The offensive explosion gave the Canaries a 4-1 lead.

The Saints got two of those runs back in the top of the fourth when Keel went deep with Krause on base. The two-run homer made the scored 4-3.

The Canaries added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Andrew Barbaro's cleared the fence in right field for the first homer of his career. Barbaro's blast gave the Canaries a two-run cushion, 5-3.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. The Saints got one in the top of the sixth when Kevin Sullivan led off the inning with a homer to right field to bring the score to 5-4. In the bottom of the inning, Beau Torbert added a homer of his own to bring the advantage back to two, 6-4.

In the eighth inning, Richardson hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot to give the Canaries the 7-4 final.

Lenny Bays (2-2) got the win for the Canaries, Dustin Bolton (3-1) took the loss for the Saints, and Kris Regas pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 16th save of the season

The Canaries begin the second half of the season on Tuesday at Midway Stadium as they take on the Saints in St. Paul. The First Half North Division Champions return to the Birdcage on Saturday, July 5, when they host the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. Arch, Inc., Gil Haugen Construction, and Associated Consulting Engineering will team-up to give away T-Shirts to the first 500 adults (All Shirts XL) on Saturday.
