Saints Inch Closer in Wild Card by Besting RailCats 8-3

ST. PAUL, MN (July 28, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints offense took a substantial amount of time to get untracked Sunday afternoon against Gary starter Stephen Hiscock, but when they finally did they never stopped and beat the Railcats by a score of 8-3 in front of 5,365 at Midway Stadium. With the victory the Saints closed the gap between them and the wild-card leading Railcats to 3.5 games.

The Saints fell behind early as the RailCats scored a pair against Saints starting pitcher Anthony Claggett in the top of the first. Adam Klein doubled to start the game and later scored on an RBI single by Brian Kolb to start the scoring. Two batters later, Craig Maddox also singled home a run and the RailCats jumped in front 2-0.

The Saints were baffled by RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock through the first four innings of the game, but finally broke through in the fifth. In that frame, Dan Kaczrowski did the damage, scoring Trevor Hairgrove with a two out RBI double.

The floodgates opened for the Saints in the sixth. Willie Cabrera and Brandon Tripp singled consecutively to begin the inning. Cabrera scored on a sacrifice fly by Ole Sheldon to tie the score at two. After Jose Hernandez walked, Brandon tripped scored on a wild pitch with Dwight Childs at the plate to give the Saints their first lead at 3-2. A few pitches later Childs increased the lead, and chased Hiscock from the game, with a two-run blast to left, his sixth home run of the season, giving the Saints a 5-2 lead. Childs finished 2-3 with a pair of RBI.

For the second night in a row the Saints added valuable insurance runs in the late innings. They tacked on one in the seventh on a Tripp RBI single with two outs and then scored a pair in the eighth by playing small ball. Jose Hernandez scored on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt by Adam Frost and then Kaczrowski drove in another with an RBI single one batter later. Kaczrowski wrapped up an impressive afternoon at the plate 4-5 with two RBI.

The RailCats loaded the bases in the ninth inning against Saints closer Matt Meyer, but Meyer escaped damage by recording a strikeout, pop out, and ground out to earn the save.

The Saints take Monday off before returning to play Tuesday night when they host the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the opener of a three game series with the North Division leaders. The Saints will call on RHP Mark Hamburger (4-4, 3.92) while the RedHawks are TBA. It is the 30th anniversary of National Lampoon's Vacation. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
