St. Paul Saints News Release
WINNIPEG, MB (May 8, 2012) - St. Paul Saints pitcher Robert Coe got his first taste of professional baseball last season and matured as the season went along. If his first exhibition start was any indication of how 2012 will go there will be no sophomore slump as the Saints lost 2-1 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park on Tuesday night.
Coe, who spent most of his time at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as a catcher, joined the Saints last year as a pitcher. His finest game was probably in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs at Shaw Park when he got the start and went 6.0 innings allowing one run on five hits. He showed how comfortable he was north of the border going 4.0 scoreless innings allowing just five hits while striking out two.
The Saints bats, still trying to get started during the exhibition season, managed just five hits, but Jose Hernandez continued his hot ways driving in the only run with an RBI single in the seventh. Willie Cabrera was the only Saints player with more than one hit, going 2-3.
The Goldeyes scored the first run of the game in the fifth on a walk, error and a wild pitch. They scored the game winning run in the eighth when Chris Roberson walked, stole second and scored on Carpenter's solid single to right-center.
The Saints will work out at Midway Stadium on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. and their next exhibition game is at Midway Stadium on Friday, May 10 at 10:35 a.m. against the Cannon Valley All-Stars.
