Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

The RailCats home exhibition opener ended in a 3-3 tie against Schaumburg on Wednesday afternoon, as play was stopped after nine and a half innings.

The RailCats jumped ahead in the second inning. Mike Coles led off with a double inside the bag at third. He stole third base and came home to score on Mike Massaro's RBI single to left.

Rookie Derek Johnson got the start for Gary and was impressive in three scoreless innings of work. He faced the minimum, allowing one hit with no walks and two strikeouts. Matt Jansen threw a perfect fourth inning but walked Drew Heithoff to lead off the fifth. Kyle Wilson relieved Jansen and surrendered an RBI double to left by Frank Pfister that tied the game at one. Brandon Hairston then delivered a two-out, two-run double to the gap in right to put the Boomers in front 3-1.

That score stood until the seventh inning. Mike Coles hit an infield single, the first RailCats hit since the second inning. Mike Rohde, in his fifth season with the RailCats, then launched a two-run bomb to right that hit off the roof of the Diamond Club beyond the right field seats to tie the game at three.

Jansen gave up a run in one-plus inning of work. Wilson was charged with two runs in an inning and two-thirds. Justin Roelle came on to throw a scoreless inning and a third.

Morgan Coombs, competing for a spot in the RailCats starting rotation, didn't allow a hit in the final three innings. He struck out four and hit a batter. The game was extended to the top of the tenth inning to allow Coombs to work a third inning.

The RailCats exhibition season continues on Thursday at 6 p.m., when they play against Windy City at Riverside Park in Hammond. Fans may purchase tickets at the gate for $5.
