St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The last time the St. Paul Saints made a trade it netted them Brad Boyer who has led the Saints in batting average and been a staple in the middle of the lineup all season long. Manager George Tsamis is hoping his latest move will have the same type of impact on the pitching staff. The Saints have acquired right-handed pitcher Kyle Morrison from the Newark Bears of the Can-Am League in exchange for a player to be named later.
The 25-year-old Morrison, has pitched in 21 games for the Bears this season, all in a relief role. In 30.1 innings of work he has an 0-1 record with an impressive 2.37 ERA. He has allowed 11 runs, eight earned, on 20 hits while striking out 34 and walking 22.
Morrison also spent the entire 2012 season and part of 2011 with Newark. In limited action last season Morrison posted a 4.60 ERA in 29.1 innings while whiffing 33. After beginning 2011 with the Washington Nationals Advanced-A affiliate in Potomac Morrison joined the Bears in early June and made 28 appearances, including two starts. He allowed 40 runs in 55.1 innings for an ERA of 6.02 and finished with a 3-4 record.
He began his three year stay in the Washington organization in 2009 after he was chosen by the Nationals in the 32nd round of the draft out of Wagner College. Morrison spent three years as a starting pitcher at the Division I school in Staten Island, New York. He had a solid resume as the number two pitcher during his freshman and sophomore seasons before breaking out during his junior season in 2009. That year he went 8-2 with a 4.16 ERA while posting team-highs in strikeouts (55) and innings pitched (67.0).
Before attending Wagner College, Morrison was a prep star at Immaculata High School in New Jersey. While there, he helped the Spartans to a pair of Somerset County Championships during his sophomore and senior seasons. As a senior he was ranked as the 17th best high school baseball player in the state of New Jersey.
In order to clear room on the roster for Morrison the Saints placed rookie pitcher Drew Gay on the inactive list. The Saints roster stands at the league maximum 22 players, 10 pitchers and 12 position players with one player on the disabled list and one on the inactive list.
