Wingnuts Take Opener from Rockland

POMONA, NY- The Wichita Wingnuts (50-25) won their fifth game in a row on Monday night, beating the Can-Am League's Rockland Boulders (38-34) 4-1 at Provident Bank Park.

Anthony Capra and three Wingnuts' relievers combined on a five-hitter. Capra earned the win, allowing one earned run on three hits over six innings. Capra walked three and struck out seven.

Wichita scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. John Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk against Boulders' reliever Dan Sausville. With Rodriguez in motion, C.J. Ziegler crushed a double to straightaway center field to drive in the lead run. Three batters later, Cole Armstrong plated Ziegler with a double to left-center that made it 3-1.

In the top of the eighth, Ryan Khoury singled through the left side leading off. After Jake Kahaulelio flied out to right field, Rodriguez ripped a triple down the right field line to score Khoury.

Nick Walters worked a scoreless seventh in relief of Capra while Andrew Aizenstadt had a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

Josh Dew pitched a shutout bottom of the ninth to earn his 18th save of the year.

Wichita jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Jared McDonald and Khoury opened the inning with singles. Two batters later, Rodriguez pulled a single to right that scored McDonald.

Rockland tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Nandin led off with a single to left. Nandin went to second on Steve Nyisztor's sacrifice bunt, stole third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Danny Bomback.

Nathaniel Roe started for the Boulders and took a no-decision. Roe allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings pitched. Roe walked four and struck out four.

Sausville took the loss in relief for Rockland.

All nine of the Wingnuts' starters reached base at least once. Seven different Wingnuts had at least one hit. Khoury, Rodriguez, Ziegler, and McDonald had multi-hit games. Abel Nieves had an 11-game hitting streak snapped. The win marked the fourth time this season Wichita has won five or more games in a row.
