St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - With much fanfare at Chaska's Athletic Field the St. Paul Saints defeated the River Valley All-Stars 7-3 on Saturday night.

Both teams struggled with their control on the mound, but it was a big blow from Saints catcher Gerard Haran that helped in the victory. With the Saints leading 1-0 in the second Ole Sheldon and Josh Alley drew back-to-back walks. Brent Krause's single to right scored Sheldon to make it 2-0. That's when Haran hit a towering homer to left that gave the Saints a 5-0 lead. The Saints tacked on one more in the inning on an RBI ground out from Brandon Carter.

The All-Stars hung tough throughout the evening and got on the board in the bottom of the second. Troy Wasiloski led off with a walk and with one out Tim Huber walked. Justin Schemell's grounder to second forced Huber, but Saints shortstop Steve Butler's throw to first went awry and that allowed Wasiloski to score.

The All-Stars pulled within three in the third when they loaded the bases with two walks and a single. Wasiloski drew his second walk in successive innings which forced in a run. The damage ended there, however, as Cullen Bahn lined into a double play to end the inning.

The Saints added their final run to make it 6-2 in the fourth when Coby Smith led off with an infield single to short. Two batters later Kevin Millar, making his Saints debut, doubled to left-center scoring Smith. Millar finished the evening 1-4.

The Saints pitching staff walked a total of 10 hitters while the All-Stars walked seven.

The Saints will play at Minnetonka's Veterans Field on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against the Minnesota Riverview All-Stars.
